I mentioned yesterday in our air fryer frozen shrimp tempura that I planned to do a few air fryer shrimp recipes this year. Well you only had to wait one day for the next.
Today, we are sharing with you how to cook air fryer frozen butterfly shrimp. Though it nearly got called air fryer frozen popcorn shrimp!
The reason being, is that here in Europe what you the US call air fryer frozen popcorn shrimp we would call air fryer frozen scampi.
Then to make things even more confusing what Americans call shrimp scampi we would just call king prawns. Or garlic butter king prawns if we had tossed them in garlic butter marinade.
Or to confuse you even more, what we would call popcorn shrimp in the UK in the US you would call this air fryer frozen butterfly shrimp.
It was only because I saw some photos of frozen food in the US for frozen butterfly shrimp, that I realised that it had a different name to it, compared to what us Brits would call it.

I know what you are talking about, because I am a Chinese Buffet addict. I was lucky enough to have one at the end of my parent’s street in my 20’s and the butterfly shrimp was the BEST.
When you cook frozen butterfly shrimp in the air fryer, it comes out incredibly crunchy and if I didn’t know it was cooked in the air fryer, I would assume it was deep fried.
What Ingredients & Gadgets Go Into Air Fryer Frozen Butterfly Shrimp?
There is not much to cooking air fryer frozen butterfly shrimp.
Grab your favourite frozen butterfly shrimp box from your freezer ready to cook them in the air fryer.
No need to defrost them first, you can cook butterfly shrimp in the air fryer when they are frozen solid.
I couldn’t get butterfly shrimp from the regular supermarket. Instead my frozen butterfly shrimp was bought in bulk from the same place that the local restaurants source their food.
As well as your frozen butterfly shrimp you need a good air fryer. We have the Philips Air Fryer XL, Philips Air Fryer XXL and the Power Air Fryer Oven in our house.
But any good air fryer that has a decent basket space is perfect.
That is because you don’t want to overcrowd the basket. Though we used our XXL and it easily fitted 20 in it without the basket being overcrowded.
How Long To Air Fry Frozen Butterfly Shrimp?
Because frozen butterfly shrimp in the air fryer are much bigger compared to other frozen food we have cooked, they need a little longer. I recommend cooking air fryer butterfly shrimp for 10 minutes on a medium heat.
How To Air Fry Frozen Butterfly Shrimp?
Cooking frozen butterfly shrimp in the air fryer is so simple:
- Remove the frozen butterfly shrimp from the packaging and remove any excess butterfly shrimp breading that has fallen off in the box.
- Place your butterfly shrimp into your air fryer basket.
- Cook for 10 minutes on a medium temperature.
- Serve with your other favourite frozen foods!

- 20 Frozen Butterfly Shrimp
- Olive Oil Spray
Instructions
- Remove your frozen butterfly shrimp from the packaging, carefully discarding any loose pieces of shrimp batter.
- Place your butterfly shrimp into the air fryer. Though make sure they are not overcrowded and there is room for them to cook.
- Spray the tops of your frozen butterfly shrimp with olive oil.
- Set the temperature to 180c/360f and the time for 10 minutes.
- When it beeps serve with your favourite sides.
