Air Fryer Frozen Fish And Chips

Air Fryer Frozen Fish And Chips

Air Fryer Frozen Fish And Chips takes me back to childhood. You see I grew up in a small seaside town in the North of England and nothing was more popular for lunch or dinner than fish and chips.

You could head to the chippy on a Friday night for fish and chips supper.

The favourite fish and chip dinner were always fish (usually cod) with chips and mushy peas. Personally, I HATED IT would much rather have a battered sausage with chips and curry sauce.

But that was me!

People from the west would come and stay in our seaside town for a week and their highlight of the week would be the fish and chips. Unlike today’s generation that would eat out of everyday and be rather extravagant with their money.

That was not how it was done then. They would bring their groceries for the week and one trip to the fish and chip shop was their eating out budget done with.

My parents owned accommodation that many of them would stay at each summer. Then my summer job was working in the fish and chip shop, serving them.

It brings back great memories of childhood and the customers were always so polite and friendly.

Cooking Frozen Fish And Chips In The Air Fryer

I love the air fryer for cooking fish and chips. Especially, using my lazy method of frozen fish and chips.

If you have not jumped and bought an air fryer yet, then I highly recommend one. They make all that boring food crispy and you forget that your air fryer frozen fish and chips hasn’t been cooked in the deep fat fryer as it tastes like it has.

It is like the air fryer is a magic wand that strips calories off your favourite deep-fried food and then you feel less guilty next time you buy something that is not super healthy.

The air fryer we have, that we used to make our frozen fish and chips in, is the Philips XL and you can order it here or read our Philips Air Fryer XL Review.

We also used our favourite kitchen gadgets accessories pack for turning the fish.

How To Cook Frozen Fish And Chips In The Air Fryer?

Air Fryer Frozen Fish And Chips

It is incredibly easy to cook frozen fish and chips in the air fryer. You would simply add the frozen chips to the air fryer first.

Then gently place the breaded fish over it. It makes it easy to cook both the fish and chips together at the same time.

Often when you have one air fryer its hard to keep one part of the meal warm while you wait for the other. But the magic happens in our frozen fish and chips because they cook together.

Halfway through cooking you can remove the breaded fish with your spatula or with tongs, then shake the chips and then add the fish back in, while you cook the other side of the fish.

When the air fryer has finished you will have fish that is so crispy that you will forgot for a moment how many calories you just saved yourself.

Why Cook Air Fryer Fish And Chips From Frozen?

There is a BIG problem sourcing fish and chips to use in the air fryer, unless you’re close to the sea.

Living in Portugal we can source fish easily, but it tends to be expensive and there is a lack of resources to make it into a meal. For example, getting a good-sized cod fillet that is fresh is nearly impossible.

Plus, it can make a real mess and fresh cod can often hold a lot of water.

However, if you cook your air fryer fish and chips from frozen, then you have everything ready prepared and you’re likely to pay a LOT less for it.

It can of course be done from fresh and that’s why we have our air fryer fish and chips recipe, BUT it is so much easier from frozen!

How Do You Cook Frozen Breaded Fish In An Air Fryer?

To cook frozen breaded fish in an air fryer, is just like how you would cook frozen fish in an oven or on the grill, just with less mess and less calories.

You place the breaded fish in your air fryer basket and then cook it on 180c/360f until it is cooked. Usually this is 10 minutes for fish that is on its own, or 16 minutes when you’re cooking fish and chips together.

If you want to reduce the mess if you have a wet batter or a flimsy breading, cook the air fryer food on your air fryer baking mat.

It is just so much better and just a quick wipe after cooking.

How Long Does It Take To Cook Fish In An Air Fryer?

The time to cook fish in an air fryer varies, in the same way that it varies if you’re cooking chicken or pork in the air fryer.

The length of time to cook fish in the air fryer would depend on:

  • Size of the fish
  • Thickness of the fish
  • What else you’re cooking with the fish

For example, fish and chips cooked together will take 16 minutes, a small fish portion could be done in 10 minutes, depending on how thick it is.

Notes

You can use any breaded frozen fish fillets that you have. We used Waitrose but there are many brands available that its best to pick your favourite. Our breaded fish fillets were plaice, but any frozen white fish is fine. For example, cod and haddock are good options.

We used McCain Oven Chips. They carry a lot less oil than other brands and best of all they look like the chunky chips you get in a fish and chip shop restaurant. If you want to cook chips on their own then do read our air fryer frozen oven chips recipe.

  1. Hi, how would you change the cook time if you have defrosted haddock and fresh potatoes not frozen? I have a Philips XXL brand new that I’m dying to use. Thanks!

    • Hi Kristan,

Sorry i am late with my reply. We have the Philips XXL now and the one thing we keep saying is it cooks things alot quicker because of its size. So i would half cook the fries depending on how many people you are cooking for and with them been fresh potatoes i would give them 10 minutes then add the fish if you are cooking them together for a further 8 minutes.

The problem been when shaking the fries you would shake the fish as well so best to turn the fish after 4 minutes and turn the fries over with a spoon.

Hope this helps and you happy cooking with your new air fryer 🙂

That “small seaside town in the North of England” wouldn’t happen to have been Whitby, would it? I had the best fish and chips of my life when we visited there on a trip to the UK. So fresh and so perfect! It was in a little place across the harbor from the abbey. Though I suppose any seaside town would do it brilliantly.

Thanks for this recipe! It’s a great solution! I used tilapia in a Ninja Foodi, but I look forward to trying other things as well.

    • Hi Roxane,

We know exactly where you are talking about as that is one of favourite places to get fish and chips from a dn we usually grab them and then drive up to the North Yorkshire Moors and sit in the country side and eat them, they were perfect.

The actual town we are talking about is called Bridlington about 20 miles south of Whitby where we used to live and we will be moving back over there next year, the hubby cannot wait for some decent fish and chips 😉

      Thank you very much!
