Air Fryer Frozen Onion Rings

Onion rings has been one of my guilty pleasures since childhood. I love the crispy coating and the lovely taste of rings of onion from the centre. Even better if they are served with a yummy dipping sauce.

I was a vegetarian for most of my childhood and the side dish of choice was always the onion rings when I was out for dinner in restaurants. My dad hated them and would always give me the onion rings whenever he had a steak dinner.

But onion rings are not just for restaurants and are fantastic for making at home. Especially in the air fryer, as it crisps them to perfection.

If you don’t do frozen onion rings in the air fryer, we also have a flourless air fryer onion rings version that is super healthy.

Can You Air Fry Frozen Onion Rings?

Yes, you can. Frozen onion rings in the air fryer are amazing. They have a wonderful crunch like deep fried and you can’t just eat the one.

You can cook frozen onion rings from frozen with no need to thaw prior to cooking. Also, because they are not messy like homemade onion rings you can cook them with other things in the air fryer basket at the same time.

Air Fryer Frozen Onion Rings – Beer Battered Or Breaded?

Air Fryer Frozen Onion Rings

The chances are, if you have bought a bag of frozen onion rings from the supermarket, they will either be beer battered or breaded.

Air Fryer Frozen Breaded Onion Rings – When you eat breaded onion rings, you’re often feeling like you’re eating diet food. It never quite feels like it has the X Factor and is lacking something.

Air Fryer Frozen Battered Onion Rings – I like both, BUT I must admit that beer battered taste BETTER.

Even Dominic, who claims he hates onion rings, is smitten with the beer battered variety.

Whether you are cooking beer battered or breaded frozen onion rings in the air fryer, they require the same cooking time.

Making it easy for you to mix and match depending on what frozen onion rings you have in the freezer.

Why Air Fryer Frozen Onion Rings?

I love onion rings. But let’s face it, they are a high calorie food. You can grab a 475g bag of frozen onion rings and cook them in the air fryer, instead of the deep fryer for a fraction of the calories.

They are crispy, just like you would expect from a deep fat fryer and really don’t taste any different. It’s a wonderful way to enjoy your favourite guilty pleasure without feeling the same level of guilt.

The Iceland frozen onion rings that I am cooking with, works out at less than 100 calories per portion.

How amazing is that?

How Long To Cook Frozen Onion Rings In Air Fryer?

air fryer frozen onion rings step by step

The frozen onion rings air fryer time is JUST 10 minutes on a high temperature of 200c/400f. Though note, I found that the bigger onion rings were cooked but not crispy, while the small to medium were perfect.

If this happens to you when you are cooking your frozen onion rings, leave the bigger ones in for an extra 3 minutes.

Notes

Temperature. Its best to cook the air fryer frozen onion rings on 200c. This gives the onion rings a crispy coating rather than feeling soggy.
Preheat. I didn’t preheat the air fryer, but you could reduce the time to 8 minutes if your air fryer is preheated. Don’t over crowd your onion rings otherwise they will stick together and won’t cook properly.
