Air Fryer Frozen Potato Chips

A funny story for you before I dive into our air fryer frozen potato chips.

In Europe potato chips are called potato crisps and to a European, when they hear the word “chips” they will associate it with French Fries.

Dominic & I knew this from watching Friends. Friends educated us on most American things that we hadn’t heard of. Including what Thanksgiving was, that an egg plant was American for aubergine and that football was known overseas as American football.

But Kyle never really paid that much attention and hadn’t seen potato chips on the TV before.

While at a beautiful park in Boston on a July summery day of 2012, he ordered himself a pulled pork sandwich (he favourite American food) along with chips. Assuming the chips was a portion of French Fries that he could load up with ketchup of mayonnaise.

Well let’s say the expression on his face was priceless when they handed him a large bag of potato chips. Both Dominic and I spent the afternoon giggling and I don’t think he spoke to us for the rest of the day!

That was six weeks before his 11th birthday and even now as a nearly adult 17-year-old, he still gets confused over American food. He calls a hotdog “American sausages” and still loves pulled pork.

I don’t know why though, as he watches more American TV than we do!

Since then, whenever he orders his food when we are out, he double checks the type of potatoes, he is getting. Just in case……

Why Air Fryer Frozen Potato Chips?

Well if you have ever tried to make them yourself, you will just know how much simpler it can make your life, by getting the frozen potato chips.

You don’t have to lose half your fingers with those crazy sharp julienne peelers and instead you have a bag of already prepped potato chips.

The bag of frozen potato chips will often include some sunflower oil and some salt. Compared to other frozen food, they are relatively healthy. You won’t find lots of foods in them that you can spell, and they are ready for you to cook and season.

We used the Iceland brand for our air fryer potato chips. They are only available in parts of Europe, but any brand will result in a similar end potato chip.

The bag of frozen potato chips that we used was a 550g bag and contained 7% sunflower oil to 93% white potatoes and a small amount of salt.

That makes it perfect because you can then add your own seasoning to them once they are cooked.

We added some steak seasoning that gave it a fiery pepper flavour and even our smaller little ones loved them.

How To Cook Air Fryer Frozen Potato Chips

Air Fryer Frozen Potato Chips

Cooking air fryer frozen potato chips is fantastic because you choose EXACTLY how you want them:

  • Add olive oil for a greasy taste
  • Add your favourite seasoning for flavoured potato chips
  • Cook them for longer for a crispy texture
  • Don’t want many, then cook less

That last one requires a lot of willpower, as in our house the 550g bag of frozen potato chips, once cooked was eaten in seconds!

Ingredients

Kitchen Gadgets:

Recipe Ingredients:

  • 550 g Frozen Potato Chips

Instructions

  • Place the frozen potato chips into the air fryer and cook for 13 minutes at 180c/360f.
  • Half way through cooking shake the air fryer so that the potatoes can breathe and are not stuck together.
  • Cook for a further 3 minutes at 200c/400f if you would like them extra crispy.
  • Season with your favourite seasonings and serve.

Notes

We found that our bag of frozen potato chips carried a lot of excess ice. It can slow down the cooking process, so if this happens to you discard of the ice. If you want your chips extra crispy, finish off with 3 minutes at 200c/400f at the end. We seasoned our potato chips with a teaspoon of steak seasoning. It gave a fiery pepper flavour.

That is so funny how the same words have different meanings in other countries. I do have to say though, I have never seen frozen chips or even frozen potato slices ever! That would just be so very handy to be able to get and save a messy situation and a lot of time.

    • Hi Catherine,

Yes they are very handy to have in especially with 3 children, but they are expensive over here compared to fresh potatoes so we do not have them often 🙂

      Thanks for your comments 🙂

Just followed the recipe and it worked great! Fun addition to our meal, they were nice and crispy. We have had fresh waffle potato chips at restaurants and now we just take some out of the freezer and can cook them ourselves. We have used the recipe twice now and it works each time.
