Air Fryer Smartie Cookies

This air fryer smartie cookies recipe is an update, from the original air fryer smartie cookie recipe that was published in the February of 2016. We have given it a facelift and shown you how easy it is to mix and match your smartie cookies depending on the theme and what ingredients you have in.

I don’t know about you, but I LOVE Smarties. Traditionally they are always for the kids. But us adults love them too! We normally have them at Christmas when they are in our kid’s selection boxes but sometimes, I just buy them for baking with.

I particularly love Smarties in cookies. They taste amazing when cooked and melt in your mouth. Stick them on top of a chocolate cake, in chocolate biscuits or even in your chocolate fondue.

I was baking some chocolate biscuits in the air fryer with Dominic last week and I mentioned that they looked really boring and needed some colour to them.

We had a look in the cupboard and found an extra packet of Smarties that were left over from Christmas and couldn’t help ourselves. Obviously, we ate some as we were baking and some did make it into the cookies.

Then we had them with some warm milk as it is freezing here in Portugal at Christmas and these 10c evenings are taking its toll on us!

What Are Smartie Cookies?

Smartie cookies is a popular British chocolate cookie, or us Brits call them chocolate biscuits. Though in Scotland and parts of Ireland they are referred to as biscuits with smarties on top.

Unlike a chocolate chip cookie that is loaded up with chocolate chips we use our favourite smarties chocolate instead.

It would be similar in the US to the monster cookie and is perfect for a number of seasons and is not just for Christmas.

You can make several variations of your smartie cookies such as adding green food colouring for grinch Christmas cookies or using orange colouring for Halloween.

Smartie Cookie Ingredients

How to make smartie cookies in the air fryer

The main ingredients that go into smartie cookies include:

As well as this we used our Philips Air Fryer XL to cook our smartie cookies. If you have not got an air fryer yet, then I highly recommend getting this one. They are a life changer in the kitchen, and they are perfect for making cookies in.

Smartie cookies with margarine. I was raised in Yorkshire and we always used margarine in baking. In fact, we often used margarine more so than butter.

As a child I rarely had any butter. You can make smartie cookies with margarine or butter, it is totally up to you.

Smartie cookies with self raising flour. The self raising flour is a MUST and I am always shocked when I see people not using it and then having to add in other ingredients.

Smartie cookies without baking powder. You don’t need any baking powder in my smartie cookies. In fact, I don’t think I ever owned any baking powder until I was in my 30’s.

Smartie cookies without brown sugar. Brown sugar ruins smartie cookies so please don’t add it in. Instead with our smartie cookies recipe we focus on white caster sugar instead.

Smartie cookies without egg. We have readers with egg allergies, but that is not the reason for going egg free in our smartie cookies, it is because the type of cookie dough combines with milk and doesn’t need any eggs.

Smartie Cookie Dough

Because the smartie cookie dough is so easy to handle, it is perfect for making with the kids. Though I always make it a bit more fun than the classic smartie cookie dough to keep the kids entertained.

When we make smartie cookies for Halloween I will get them to find for me all the orange and green smarties and place just these into the cookie dough. Also, I will add food colouring too.

Though when making the smartie cookie dough with kids, make more as they will eat more than they mix!

You can also freeze the smartie cookie dough for another time.

Notes

If you don’t have smarties look at what other kids’ chocolate, you have in and add it to the mixture. Your kids will forgive for stealing their chocolate if you make them awesome cookies.
If its Christmas I recommend adding in some green food colouring and using just green smarties, that way you can make grinch cookies instead.
