You will love this air fryer version of big mac in a bowl. The salad ingredients are prepped while the burger is air frying, and it all comes together in one big serving platter. Ideal for a healthy burger date night for two.
This burger in a bowl recipe is an updated post. We originally shared with you how to make big mac sauce in 2016 and a burger salad in 2017. We have now combined them both into one and we hope you like our update.

Unhealthy confession for you. The hubby and I (many years ago now) would binge on takeaways 3-4 times a week. I would have a garlic bread with cheese, onion rings and chips.
Whilst Dominic would have a double cheeseburger, a single chicken burger and cheesy chips.
Neither of us was in a happy place at the time and neither of us wanted to cook.
No wonder we were obese.
Since losing a LOT of weight, we still both enjoy our burgers. The only difference is that they are not high fat ones from the takeaway.
They are burgers that are cooked in the air fryer and they are missing the burger bun that always made me so bloated.
Whilst I would always refer to them as a deconstructed burger, they are known to many on Slimming World, Weight Watchers, Whole30 and Keto as the burger in a bowl.
Though, whether you call them a deconstructed burger, burger in a bowl, or a big mac burger in a bowl, they are delicious and ideal for the air fryer.

What Is Burger In A Bowl?
Burger in a bowl is a burger salad. Instead of the ingredients for your burger been loaded into a burger bun, its into a bowl, hence the name burger in a bowl.
You then layer a bowl with burger garnish and then sprinkle pieces of burger meat over the salad.
You then drizzle your burger bowl with thousand island dressing.
Big Mac Burger In A Bowl
Because burger in a bowl is based upon the famous Big Mac burger at McDonalds, it is often referred to as a big mac burger in a bowl.
But because I don’t want the cheap cheese you get on a big mac our version today is just like a Big Mac just minus the cheese.
How To Make Burger In A Bowl?
This is how to make your slimming world big mac burger in a bowl:
- Load your burger ingredients into a bowl and mix and make into burger shapes.
- Load burgers into the air fryer and air fry.
- Make your thousand island dressing.
- Assemble your salad.
It really is that simple to cook our burger bowl recipe.
Burger In A Bowl With Thousand Island Dressing
I love the yummy big mac sauce you get on a real Big Mac and wanted to create something similar with this burger in a bowl.
I asked my eldest son (loves his McDonalds) to try it and he said it was just like the Big Mac sauce.
To make our burger bowl special sauce you simply load into a bowl the following and then mix:
- 1Tbsp Fromage Frais
- 1Tsp Mustard Powder
- 1Tbsp Fat Free Greek Yoghurt
- 1Tbsp Tomato Puree
- ½ Tsp Paprika
- ½ Tsp Gherkin Juice
That is it. Of course, I am following Slimming World and making myself a Slimming World Big Mac Sauce. If I wasn’t I would use mayonnaise instead of fat free Greek yoghurt and you can mix it up with what sauces you have in.
Then once you are done you have a great slimming world burger sauce that looks like this:
Then you can add your sauce to the top of your burger salad once it is all cooked.
Air Fryer Burger In A Bowl
Air Fryer Burger In A Bowl Ingredients:
Homemade Big Mac Sauce:
- 1/3 Iceberg Lettuce
- 3 Medium Tomatoes
- ½ Small Onion
- 10 Gherkin Slices
- Peel and dice your onion. Put half aside for your salad. Load your burger ingredients into a bowl and make into two burger patty shapes. Place into the air fryer and air fry for 15 minutes on 180c/360f. While the burgers are cooking put your salad together. Wash your lettuce and cut like a big mac. Add a layer of lettuce into your bowl and top with sliced tomatoes, sliced gherkins, and sliced onion.
- When the air fryer beeps remove the burgers and put to one side to cool. In the meantime, make your burger sauce by combining all sauce ingredients into a bowl and mixing well.
- When the burgers have cooled, chop into small chunks or separate with your hands. Load the burger chunks onto the salad and drizzle with your big mac sauce.
