Air Fryer Potato Wedges

Here is what I had to say about air fryer potato wedges back on the 3rd of November 2015:

“Welcome to my first recipe on Recipe This. I must admit I gave it some thought over what would be the first and then decided it had to be something easy to make, quick and that the entire family adore.

Enter my Air Fryer potato wedges……

The first time I ever tried potato wedges I was about 10 years old. My mum had taken me out for lunch at Pizza Hut and I must admit to being rather grumpy and wishing that they served chips (French Fries to Americans).

Instead we had potato wedges. I was the fussy child that always moaned and the thought of skin on my chips seemed too wrong.

But I tried them and fell in love with them there and then. They tasted so crispy, had loads of spice on them and made a fantastic side for my pizza.

Here in Portugal they don’t serve potato wedges at Pizza Hut and I must admit it’s the first thing I think about when I think of favourite sides when we are out for pizza.

Nowadays, when we have potato wedges it will be at home as part of a Mexican food night.

We will have air fryer potato wedges, air fryer chicken fajitas, an air fryer cobb salad, and some spicy cauliflower rice. It is always delicious and there is never any left!

For my potato wedges I have hated the fact that with us not having a grill, that they don’t end up as crispy as I would like in the oven so when I got my Air Fryer it seemed the perfect way to make them. That way they can be crispy and be super quick to make.”

Now back to 2022:

Well even now 6 and a bit years later, I still adore Air Fryer Potato Wedges. You see when we are tired and want something quick to cook, I can slice them, season them, and throw them in the air fryer.

It is PERFECT.

I would say out of everything we cook in the air fryer, it is in our top 5 of the BEST air fryer recipes.

But don’t just take my word for it, this is what Carol posted in our Facebook group (you can join it here):

Can You Make Potato Wedges In An Air Fryer?

Yes, you can cook potato wedges in the air fryer. And not only can you make them, but you will fall in love with them.

The taste, the texture, the fluffy centre, the crispy skin and the seasoning are all spot on.

Each time we make fresh potato wedges in the air fryer we will always argue over who gets the last one, with grumpy remarks of why don’t we have air fryer wedges more often?

Are Air Fried Potato Wedges Healthy?

Yes, they are. Whilst we often think of potato wedges as being the unhealthy potato side dish we buy from KFC or Pizza Hut, cooked in the air fryer they are much healthier.

That is because fresh potato wedges in the air fryer are just using white potatoes, a tiny quantity of extra virgin olive oil and seasoning. There is no deep fat fryers involved or processed ingredients.

Do Air Fryers Make Food Crispy?

Yes, the air fryer does make food nice and crispy. I would say it’s the number #1 reason why most people buy an air fryer. I know it’s the reason why I did.

Back in 2011 I bought an air fryer because I wanted chips but without the deep fat fryer calories. Our air fryer chips soon became our thing and they were so crispy and yummy.

That same rule can apply to this potato wedges air fryer recipe or even things like a KFC zinger burger, air fryer KFC chicken, air fryer frozen chicken nuggets and so many more recipes.

Potato Wedges Air Fryer Popularity

After originally introducing people to air fryer potato wedges back in 2015, I have become fascinated with the popularity that has followed.

Back then ONLY 480 people searched in Google for air fryer potato wedges or potato wedges in air fryer.

Yet today, they have become one of the air fryer favourites with a monthly search of 14800.

Isn’t that AMAZING?

Fresh Potato Wedges In Air Fryer

If you want the best air fryer potato wedges, then you must make homemade ones.

Of course, you can buy frozen, but homemade fresh potato wedges are in a totally different league.

But before you think making fresh is hard work and too much effort, then let me tell you now it really isn’t.

  • You slice potatoes (no peeling)
  • You toss them in a bowl with seasoning and oil
  • Air fry until crispy

and you have air fryer potato wedges from scratch.

Potato Wedges Air Fryer Recipe Ingredients

Potatoes – Medium to large white potatoes work best. Any bigger than this and its hard to cut them all into the same wedge shape and some will end up too big. Also go for potatoes that have good skin, as you are not peeling them.

Oil – I truly believe the best oil for the air fryer is extra virgin olive oil. It gives you the best crisp and the best flavour.

Seasoning. Then for seasoning your potato wedges its all about personal choice. I love salt, pepper, cajun, or Mexican seasoning (to give it a flavour kick) and then usually some sweet paprika too. But you might have your own favourite. Or another option is to use one of your favourite barbecue rubs.

Sauce – Then for the sauce I love mine with salsa, a mayonnaise, or sometimes salad cream.

Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in this air fryer potato wedges recipe it has just been our Philips Air Fryer. We have this one and its wonderful for many types of air fryer recipes.

Plus, we recommend you head over to our air fryer recipes category as we have more than 500 tried and tested air fryer recipes and have been air frying for 10 years.

How To Make Potato Wedges In Air Fryer?

air fryer potato wedges step by step
  • Prep. Start by slicing your potatoes into wedges and making sure your potato skin is clean.
  • Mix. Into a bowl add your potato wedges, seasoning and extra virgin olive oil and mix with your hands.
  • Cook. Load the potato wedges into the air fryer basket and air fry for 15 minutes at 180c/360f. Then do the fork test and if fork tender increase the temperature to 200c/400f and cook for a further 7 minutes before serving.

And I am sure you can see now how easy it is cooking potato wedges in air fryer and why you should be doing it too!

Air Fryer Seasoned Potato Wedges

The secret behind these delicious potato wedges, and the same secret behind our air fryer five guys fries is that they are seasoned first.

The seasoning then sticks to the potato wedges and creates a crisp that you wouldn’t get any other way with the air fryer.

Then that lovely seasoning creates a delicious flavour once your air fryer wedges are cooked.

You can mix and match seasoning, just try to use one with brown sugar i.e. a Cajun/Mexican or barbecue rub, as this helps them crisp up better.

Air Fryer Potato Wedges Fork Test

Air Fryer Potato Wedges Fork Test

When making potato wedges in an air fryer, I recommend what I call the fork test. The fork test is a great way to check if your potato wedges are cooked or not. Because some air fryers work differently to others, I recommend this as a general guide for getting the cook time right.

Then if you do the fork test and they are not fork tender then you can add a couple of extra minutes before increasing the temperature to make your potato wedges crispy.

How Long To Cook Potato Wedges In Air Fryer?

The potato wedges air fryer time is JUST 22 minutes. This includes 15 minutes to cook the potato wedges and then a further 7 minutes to create crispy air fryer potato wedges.

Potato Wedges Tips & Tricks

  • Use a mixing bowl to coat the wedges in oil and seasoning. This gives a fantastic all round coating that you don’t get from loading into Ziploc bags.
  • I have found that the best way to create crispy potato wedges is to cook at a medium temperature first and then increase the temperature for the last few minutes.
  • You can mix and match seasonings. I prefer either a barbecue rub or cajun seasoning.
  • Do the fork test before increasing the temperature. It’s a fast way to check if your wedges are cooked or not.

Top Air Fryer Trick – You can also use the air fryer to reheat your leftover potato wedges. Simply place into the air fryer basket and air fry for 5 minutes at 160c/320f.

    • Thanks Mollie,

The airfryer depends on what you want them for. If you want them to lose weight you can, but you can also have them to make food crispy, to making cooking easier and to be a bit healthier. Though if you want to be healthy better avoid this months posts as we are baking cookies etc.
