Our air fryer onion rings recipe is an update of a 2017 air fryer recipe. We have added extra recipe photos, more tips and overall improved the recipe. We hope you like the updated version!

Here is an air fryer owners dream come true. These are my crispy onion rings that are completely gluten free and will have you begging for more.

I should start by saying that I have always had and always will have an onion rings addiction. I have always loved them.

It started as a nice side to have when you went out for burger and chips, then I became addicted to them at KFC and it has gone on from there.

I remember having them in KFC as a child with some fries and coleslaw. Though this was more because my parents loved KFC and when you were a vegetarian there in the 80’s that was where the food choice started and ended! There was no such thing as a veggie burger then ????

Well a couple of days ago we were at our local burger bar having a meal. I had a burger meal deal with some onion rings, along with fries and a drink. Plus, it wouldn’t be a burger bar without finishing the meal with a sundae.

Then a couple of days later we had an idea for making some healthy onion rings. Onion rings that I could cook in the air fryer and I wouldn’t feel guilty about.

The air fryer homemade onion rings tasted AMAZING and I no longer need to feel guilty when I want an onion rings binge. Even BETTER the rest of my family don’t like onion rings, so they are all MINE.

Can You Air Fry Onion Rings?

YES YES YES! Can I shout from the roof tops and say how amazing the air fryer is for cooking delicious onion rings?

You can follow this onion rings recipe right now for healthy onion rings or follow my other recipe for air fryer frozen onion rings.

The air fryer was meant for cooking food that you would normally deep fry and even with a light batter the air fryer can do such a good job you will wonder why you used to deep fry them.

Go homemade or frozen and just try them once and see if air fryer onion rings are for you.

Air Fryer Onion Rings Without Flour

One thing that you are probably trying to get your head around, is how on earth you can cook air fryer onion rings without flour. Well YOU CAN and there is one AMAZING product we use to make flourless onion rings in the air fryer.

That is Bob’s Red Mill and his gluten free oat flour.

It is an amazing product and I use this oat flour for any air fryer recipes that I want to make gluten free. I have an intolerance to gluten and always feel ill after eating it and love how light oat flour is.

It makes your regular deep fried food that you cook in the air fryer have a wonderful taste and texture, but without that heavy, too much batter feeling.

Then when you dip your fresh onion into your bowls to make the onion rings batter, you have a bowl with seasoned oat flour instead of real flour.

You can buy Bobs Red Mill Oat Flour on Amazon, or alternatively on Thrive Market when you sign up for their free membership.

Air Fryer Onion Rings Gluten Free

But I am sure you’re thinking, that the oat flour just covers the flour replacement so what do you do about breadcrumbs?

Well the great thing is, that in this world that caters towards people with gluten allergies, that there is a lot of alternatives.

My favourite option is to make our bread maker gluten free bread rolls and then place in the blender a bread roll (or two) and blend into breadcrumbs with your blender.

Or you can take ANY of your favourite gluten free bread products and blend them.

What Ingredients & Gadgets Go Into Air Fryer Onion Rings?

Air Fryer Onion Rings Bowl Method

There are 5 main ingredients that go into air fryer homemade onion rings:

I would recommend before making your air fryer onion rings that you have a good air fryer or an air fryer with a non-stick basket.

That is because there are so many cheap brands of air fryers, that are just not very good and air fryers that are not non-stick.

What I do recommend is the Philips Air Fryer XL and these air fryer accessories. They are perfect for getting you started and using in our air fryer onion rings and many other air fryer recipes of ours.

Though, in todays recipe for air fryer homemade onion rings, it is all about having a bowl system in place. That way you can effortlessly cook your homemade onion rings without it feeling like a drawn-out task.

For specialist ingredients in our air fryer onion rings we use Bob’s Red Mill Oat Flour and gluten free breadcrumbs.

You can make your own breadcrumbs (like we mentioned above) or purchase gluten free bread and make it into breadcrumbs.

Though if you don’t follow a gluten free diet you can use regular breadcrumbs!

Air Fryer Onion Rings Tips

  • No Oat Flour? You can also use rolled oats and place them in a blender and blend until they resemble flour. It only takes a minute or two.
  • Want A Golden Glow? To stop your onion rings from looking anaemic add a little spray of extra virgin olive oil on them as you place them in the air fryer.
  • Season. There is nothing worse than unflavoured onion rings. A minute or two is all it takes to season your bowls.
  • Three Bowls. To speed yourself up and to stay organised work on a set up of 3 bowls. One with the egg mixture, another with the oat flour and the third with your gluten free breadcrumbs. Then you simply toss the sliced onions in each.
  • Cook In Batches. Your onion rings can become stuck together and not cook properly, if you cook too many at once. Instead work in batches until you have all your homemade onion rings cooked.
  • Add Ins. If you have a favourite seasoning you can mix and match. If you want a cheesy result, why not add some grated parmesan to your breadcrumbs? Or what about some tarragon if serving your onion rings with our Air Fryer KFC Chicken.

    • Hi Dawn

The reason this recipe works so well is because we are using gluten free oats. So if you want to substitute you need something that is also gluten free.

      Regards

      • Hi Ann,

Have you heard of porridge oats you use to make porridge? If you have then gluten free oats are just porridge oats but without the gluten 🙂

        Hope you find some!

    • Hi Brook

      Thank you for your comment.

We had this problem and how we rectified it was to really push the onion rings into the oats and make sure it was very firm then re dip them into the egg and then add them to the oats again. Make sure you push them really hard so the oats and egg grip around the onion ring.

      Hope this helps.

      Regards

    • Hi Leann

The almond flour should be fine to use, but just a not of caution we use 180c which works out at 360f. We have had some confused people not realising that it is 180c and not Fahrenheit.

Hope they turn out good for you.

      Thanks.

    • Hi Jackie,

I like eggs because they help to stick it really well. But as a Plan B use some extra virgin olive oil instead or I have also tried it with coconut butter.

      Kind regards

  1. This didn’t work at all. Followed the recipe exactly. They just came out like onions dipped in dry flour. Had to spray them with coconut oil non stick spray to get them to brown slightly. Any suggestions?

    • Hi jason

Sorry they did not work out for you. We put some olive oil on ours and it gave them a good crisp taste but not too dry. I would suggest doing what you did with the coconut spray and cook them with that on and see if it makes them a bit more moist.

      Kind Regards

      Sam

    • If you want the crispy batter to stick to the onion and not fall off, you have to remove the inner membrane from the onion.
