Welcome to my Instant Pot Baked Potatoes. An Instant Pot baked potato is incredibly quick and easy to make and perfect for a comforting meal for you and your family in the Instant Pot.
OMG give me Instant Pot baked potatoes. One of my true best friends and something that I love to cook for myself and my family.
It is one of those things that time speeds up in the Instant Pot compared to the old bake it in the oven way of cooking.
The way I have always seen baked potatoes, is as something that I always forget to get in the oven on time. Then I decide to cook them and Dominic is complaining at me that his lunch is 2 hours late.
I know BAD WIFE/BAD MOTHER.
Plus, don’t get me started about how long it takes me to make my baked potatoes into loaded potato skins. We should not go there….
So, I stopped cooking baked potatoes, just because I forgot and I was slow. Instead it was something that I ate when we went out for lunch instead. I would have my baked potato loaded with butter, cheese and sometimes coleslaw too and it was so, so delicious.
Then I got an Instant Pot and my world changed forever. All of a sudden I was having the most amazing Instant Pot Baked Potatoes.
Instead of taking over an hour in the oven (and that was a small one) I could suddenly make these HUGE Instant Pot baked potatoes in the Instant Pot in less than half the time.
You can then load them with whatever your favourite baked potato toppings are and hey presto you have dinner on the table. Our favourite toppings for our baked potatoes is butter, cheese and mince but we also love tuna and mayonnaise on top like how they have the traditional British jacket potatoes.
Instant Pot Jacket Potatoes vs Instant Pot Baked Potatoes
Okay so a lot of people asked me when I published my jacket potatoes recipe in January what they are actually are. Well they are the same thing, just a different country = a different name for them.
Us Brits call them jacket potatoes meaning that it is potatoes in their jackets and the jacket is the skin. Compare to the Americans that have a more simple explanation which is a baked potato because they are simply thrown in the oven and baked.
Instant Pot Baked Potato Cooking Times
There are 3 different types of ways to cook baked potatoes in the Instant Pot or other electric pressure cookers. Both actually cook for exactly the same time and it just depends whether or not you would rather cook it all in one go or leave it to rest.
Instant Pot Baked Potato Version 1 – This involves cooking it for 10 minutes on high pressure on the manual setting. Then you allow it to naturally release pressure for 20 minutes.
Instant Pot Baked Potato Version 2 – This is where you cook it for 30 quick minutes on manual, then you quickly remove pressure. No letting it rest, just cook it and get it out of there just like you would with an oven.
Instant Pot Baked Potato Version 3 – Us Brits often do it by cooking it for 20 minutes on the manual setting and then 10 minutes of natural pressure release.
As you can see the end result still comes back to different ways of cooking it for 30 minutes in the Instant Pot. All of them do a fine job in producing delicious Instant Pot Baked Potatoes/Jacket Potatoes it just depends how you prefer them.
Below we have done version 2 just because it’s hard to remember when it has done x amount of natural pressure release. As like with many mums you can go off and do your thing and totally forget about them. So at least with no natural pressure release, you know when it beeps dinner is ready to be dished up!
Though if you are using the Instant Pot Baked Potatoes to transfer into mash then I recommend that you give it 35 minutes on high pressure and then allow it to naturally release pressure for a further 10 minutes. Then they are incredibly easy to mash up.

- Stab your baked potatoes with a fork and sprinkle with a little salt and pepper.
- Insert the steamer rack into the Instant Pot and pour a cup of boiling water over it.
- Place your potatoes into a steamer dish.
- Add your potatoes.
- Put the lid on, set to sealing and press manual for 30 minutes.
- Once complete quickly remove pressure so that they don’t carry on cooking.
- Serve with your choice of toppings.
Always make sure that the baked potatoes you choose are roughly the same size. Otherwise you will end up with some that are like mash and others that are undercooked. I always add boiling water to the Instant Pot as it speeds up the time that it takes to go to pressure.
You can cook up to 2 kilos/4.5lbs at once in the Instant Pot. It is always best to cook your Instant Pot baked potatoes in a steamer tray/dish. This way they don’t have a soggy texture when cooked.
Instant Pot Baked Potato Crispy Skin
The secret to the most amazing crispy skin on your baked potatoes in the Instant Pot is to do the following:
Remove the potatoes, the steamer shelf and dish along with the water from the Instant Pot. Set the Instant Pot to sauté, rub the skins of the baked potatoes in a little olive oil and then cook for 3 minutes turning them every 45 seconds so that they don’t burn.
How Many Calories In Instant Pot Baked Potatoes
From a calorie point of view, they are low in calories. This is because the only calories are the potatoes and it is only when you load them up with extra toppings that they become calorific.
Therefore one medium baked potato cooked in the Instant Pot will just cost you 147 calories. Even if you loaded it up with chilli con carne it would still make a delicious low calorie meal.
