Pressure Cooker Cabbage. Using your Instant Pot (or other pressure cooker) to make steamed cabbage is one of its best uses. It is super fast, super delicious and your kids will want to eat cabbage when you have made them my pressure cooker cabbage recipe.
I first steamed some vegetables in the pressure cooker in January of last year. I had just got my Instant Pot Pressure Cooker and wanted to start off with something simple. I chose broccoli as it’s my favourite vegetable. I couldn’t believe how nice it was and that it was cooked in just 2 minutes.
It was truly amazing.
Since then I have steamed all kinds of vegetables in my Instant Pot Pressure Cooker. I have had instant pot cabbage, instant pot carrots, instant pot butternut squash, instant pot potatoes, instant pot pumpkin and so much more.
But I have hardly blogged about any of it apart from broccoli. Not that I am ashamed of it, but because other instant pot recipes have come up and I have forgotten all about the vegetables that I adore.
Meatless Monday Instant Pot Pressure Cooker Cabbage
Back in early 2017 I also started a range of. Recipes that fitted in with the trend of meatless Monday and then I forgot about it. I stopped making sure that I had Meatless Monday recipes. But they are back. Starting of course today with Instant Pot Pressure Cooker Cabbage.
The Meatless Monday campaign (if you have not heard of it) is a worldwide campaign for us all to eat a LOT more vegetables on a Monday and have a day free of meat. In our household (because we are running with our Mrs Beeton campaign in 2018 we decided that in our household EVERY Monday will involve us following the plant based diet.
So, to kick start our first Meatless Monday feature we are steaming cabbage in the Instant Pot pressure cooker.
It’s the business and tastes so good.
Forget in the old days when your grandma cooked dinner in 3 pans. She would have cabbage boiling in one, potatoes in a second and pork chops on the grill.
The problem wasn’t the food, it was the fact that boiled vegetables lost its flavour and nutrients. Yet with a pressure cooker (like the Instant Pot) you have the most amazing instant pot cabbage that you have ever tried.
Instant Pot Cabbage
This instant pot cabbage (that you can make in any pressure cooker) is the basic Instant Pot cabbage recipe to get you started. You can use it for serving up with your dinner as your side vegetable or even as the main thing.
We used a kilo of cabbage to make this steamed cabbage recipe and we also paid just 65 cents a kilo for it, making it a fantastic frugal purchase. A cheap family meals option for many, many families and something I am sure our grandmas would be proud of us for doing.

Question for you! If I want to cook several of these that have the same cook time would that work? Have you combined veggies such as rutabagas and turnips?
Jennifer Wibe says
Also, if I wanted to cook them separately and do one veggie at a time (rutabagas, turnips, and cabbage) how long does it take to bring it back up to pressure in between each veggie? I am new to the instapot and I haven’t tried cooking back to back items for the same meal.

Hi Jennifer,
The problem you have there is when you do that it doesn’t take as long to come to pressure the next time. So what I recommend is that when you go in for your next vegetables you add a couple more minutes of cooking time or you empty the water out and add chilled water.
Because chilled water takes a lot longer to go to pressure compared to warm water.
For example take broccoli. You could cook it for 0 minutes with cold water and also cook it for 2 minutes with warm water and get the same result.
I hope that helps.

Hi Jennifer,
Yes I have. I often cook vegetables together and have also combined ones with different cook times. You can also fill an instant pot and keep the same cook time.
