Welcome to my latest Instant Pot recipe and today is all about how to make a delicious Instant Pot vegetable chow mein. Bring together all your favourite Chinese flavours into one quick family noodle recipe. This is heaven on a plate and so filling for my hungry kids.
I planned to cover comfort food on the blog (via the Instant Pot) next month on Recipe This after kickstarting our Instant Pot with lots of healthy ones. Well I nearly made it. One day short of February and here I am with a delicious noodles dish.
Of course noodles can be partly healthy thanks to the vegetables and the seasonings, but it is best not to pretend that noodles and soy sauce are good for us, as we all know they are not!
But its my birthday today (I am 35!!!) and I am sure you’ll all let me off the hook, especially with how delicious noodles can be. Then come next month I can bombard you with lots of pasta, more noodles and plenty of cakes.
But these noodles are a lot healthier than my macaroni cheese, so surely that gets me off the hook????
Anyway, back to business these noodles are truly amazing. They feature loads of noodles direct from my local Chinese supermarket, lots of Chinese flavour, vegetables and because they are cooked in the Instant Pot they don’t take all day to make.
Plus how often do you have a pan for noodles, one for your stir fry and then other bowls and things for making it all come together?
Well in this recipe it is perfect for getting it on and forgetting about it, well until that smell of ginger and garlic explodes into the air of your kitchen.

13 minutes seems a bit long for most noodles. Can you please specify what noodles you used?
Samantha and Dominic says
Hi Ruby
We used regular egg noodles from our local Chinese supermarket.
Sam
MsTootington says
Yeah, 13 mins seems long! Did you cook in high ir low pressure? Want to try it this week.
Samantha and Dominic says
Hi
We cooked on high pressure just because the noodles were pretty thick compared to the normal egg noodles from our supermarket. If you think it is too long take off 5 minutes but we are still learning as we go along and this seemed to turn out ok for us. Let us know how it turns out for you and what you did differently.
Thanks.

Can I add chicken?
Samantha and Dominic says
Hi Crystal,
Yes absolutely. This is just a nice veggie version 🙂
Karen says
Chinese seasoning is a little general. Can you be more specific?
Samantha and Dominic says
Hi Karen,
This is the seasoning we mean:

This is the kind of chinese seasoning we mean.

Steff says
You have oriental seasoning and then Chinese five spice seasoning but when you click on the link It takes you to the five Spice. Are you only using the five Spice or is it 2 different seasonings?
Samantha and Dominic says
Hi Steff
The links are just the wrong way round. We used both the five spice and mixed spice but if thats too much spice for you just the five spice would work fine.
Kind Regards
Sam

Thank you! I see now I only clicked on the link for the one I couldn’t find. Trying it tonight! Thanks again for responding!

Ours did not turn out properly; and I do believe that it was related to the clarity of the instructions that were given. There were a lot of adaptations that we had to make just to get something cooked. It shouldn’t be that way:
A) I had my pressure cooker still set to saute whenever I reached the 6th step; after sealing the pressure cooker, the pressure cooker had an interruption due to an error code. I had to come back and read the comments to find the manual setting that others used.
B) I had purchased flour noodles; because I did not know what type of noodles were used and the ingredients only say noodles.
C) Step 1 and Step 2 both say to cut up and peel our one-and-only onion…
I DONT want to give this recipe a bad rating; because I could smell it’s potential the entire time that I was in the kitchen. I would rather say something, read a revision, and then follow the revised procedure; and have the ability to give it a 5-star then to rate it now at 2-stars.
With all due respect.
Thank You!
Samantha and Dominic says
Hi kevin,
Sorry yours did not turn out as it should.
A, Never place the lid on your pressure cooker during sauteing as you will always get an error code like you did, always turn it of as sauteing is just for browning a joint and slightly cooking vegetables not for a full cook.
B, The noodles used were egg noodles.
C, I have changed it to just number 1, we used a large onion so chopped it in half and used it over instructions 1 and 2.
Hope these offer you some clarity.
Kind regards
Sam

We enjoyed this!! I had issues only because I used dry chow mein noodles and there wasn’t enough liquid but I will try it again with agt noodles. Also I had some cooked chicken breast and after it was finished just added it the chow mein and it is delicious. Thank you!!
Samantha and Dominic says
Hi Dell,
Glad you enjoyed the recipe Dee, thank you for the 4 stars.
Kind Regards

Shannon says
Could I add uncooked chicken? How would I need to adjust the cooking time?
Thanks!!
Samantha and Dominic says
Hi Shannon,
I would not change the cooking time but use quite big pieces of chicken as too not over cook. I would add it when you are sauteing the vegetables and it should be fine.
Kind Regards
Sam

Can you confirm the amount of noodles? It says ‘1 pack’. I see noodles sold in 375 gram, 454 gram and 500 gram packs where I live (canada). Thanks.
Samantha and Dominic says

Is this cooked as 13 minutes on low pressure or high pressure?
Another noodle recipe I make uses 4 mins on high pressure.
Samantha and Dominic says
Hi E,
Unless it is rice we always cook everything in our Instant Pot on high pressure. I hope this helps!
Kind regards
Sam

I,m trying today I found the 5 spice powder. But can’t find the oriental seasonings
or can i use 3tbl of the 5 spice.
RecipeThis.com says
Hi Kari,
Yes just double it up with some Chinese 5 spice. Or your own local Chinese seasoning that you normally use in Chinese and Oriental cooking as often they are different from country to country.
