We will be celebrating a decade living in Portugal next month. Its hard to believe that it has been 10 years since we lived in Great Britain.
I love living in Portugal. But when Brits ask us now about life in Portugal compared to Britain, I always quote the culture, as it just so different.
It is like going back to the 1950’s or 1960’s. Kids out playing in the street, people wish you a good morning as you walk to work, there is the importance of teaching your kids to cook, dinner at the table as a family, even the public transport is like something from decades ago.
They are also slow at getting into trends around the world. For example, Paleo style food has only just arrived. Such as gluten free oats, coconut oil or even coconut flour. They have a small section for it at the supermarket but most people here in Portugal are not interested. They see it as expensive products when they have been fine all these years without it!
Instead they follow the Mediterranean Diet. Life is all about the fruit and vegetables, the meat, the fish, the nuts and the seeds. Practically every family will have soup every day and chicken are the most popular meat.
This brings me to dining out at cafes and restaurants here in Portugal and the joke about the bread buns. In Britain and in the US its all about the huge burger with the melted cheese and the big bread bun.
But on the Mediterranean, there is no bread bun. Instead you’re likely to receive a fried egg, sometimes salad, fried onions and a big hamburger patty that is full of Mediterranean flavours.
It is truly delicious, and I NEVER miss my bread bun.
Here is a photo of ours and as you can see we have one with fried onions and one with a fried egg:
When we are eating out, we will often overhear waiters explaining to the tourists that they come without buns and the tourists are disgusted by the thought.
I am sure I am going to get plenty of giggles this summer as the new tourists arrive in the Algarve and dine in at restaurants during the beautiful summer season.
Mediterranean Paleo Burgers In The Air Fryer
Our local life here in Portugal, trips across the border to Spain and summer in France are behind our inspiration for these Mediterranean Paleo Burgers in the Air Fryer. The idea that you can eat a burger the Mediterranean way, without missing the bread bun and without needing the cheese.
Before America took the German burger and added the bad bits, this was exactly how burgers were eaten. Hamburgers even get their name from the place in Germany called Hamburg.
I also find that bread buns are high in carbs and make me feel rubbish and just don’t fill me up. This is probably why when I have a McDonalds I am starving an hour later!
Our BEST of the Mediterranean Paleo Burgers In The Air Fryer include:
- My favourite Mediterranean Dried Herbs
- Fried Eggs
- Fried Onions
- Sweet Potato Fries
Together it is like a platter from a delicious Mediterranean restaurant, that you wished you could go back to day after day.#Mediterranean #Paleo #Burgers In The #AirFryer #Recipe @recipe_thisClick To Tweet
Peel and dice the ¼ of an onion.
Place the mince, the garlic and the onion into a mixing bowl with the seasoning and mix well.
Make into hamburger shapes.
Cook in the air fryer for 15 minutes at 180c/360f.
Serve with a fried egg, sweet potato fries and some fried onion.
Depending on the size of your air fryer you could cook the sweet potato fries in the air fryer with the burgers. Though this time we cooked the burgers first and while the fried egg and the fried onions were cooking, cooked our air fryer sweet potato fries.
We use garlic puree when cooking with garlic. Its much quicker than having to peel and mince garlic and you can buy it pureed in water. We used mince that was a mixture of pork mince and beef mince. You could use whatever you have or whatever is your favourite.
