No Drain Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes

If you are anything like me, then mashed potatoes will be at the top of your list among the best comfort foods of all time.

That dish that can either be the star on the dinner plate or the best side dish you could ever eat.

My favourite mashed potatoes as a kid would be a big bowl of them that my mum would make. Served with a roast beef dinner and always so creamy and loaded with butter.

Though our eldest son Kyle was heartbroken when she replaced her amazing homemade mash with smash and has spent the last 8 years telling me that I must never do that and that mash is one of those dream foods that must always be made with real potatoes.

Clearly, he was haunted by the packet of smash because she served him smash back in early 2012 when he was 10 years old.

I can imagine that she asked him what he would like for dinner and he said “mash” and she looked in the cupboard didn’t have any potatoes and made smash!

But what she probably didn’t know, is that after his love for lasagne, his favourite homemade comfort food is the utterly delicious mashed potatoes.

He is also raised in a household free of processed foods and is used to real potatoes and nothing out of a packet.

However, if you normally reach for the smash because it is quicker, then let me introduce you to no drain instant pot mashed potatoes.

Throw them in, mash them in the instant pot inner pot and you are done.

Its one of those lifechanging uses of the instant pot that people talk about. Just like instant pot caramel, one of those recipes that are must for the instant pot.

I know you all have a zillion questions about no drain instant pot mashed potatoes, so let me answer some of them for you.

Are Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes Good?

Yes! Instant Pot mashed potatoes are so yummy. In fact, since getting our first instant pot in the Black Friday sales of 2016, we have only made mashed potatoes in the instant pot.

Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes No Drain?

You are probably wondering what instant pot mashed potatoes no drain means?

In a nutshell it is an easier method of instant pot mashed potatoes where you add just enough liquid to cook moist mashed potatoes.

As the instant pot cooks your potatoes you end up with just enough liquid in the bottom to mash your potatoes.

You don’t need to drain your potatoes and you can do your mashed potatoes JUST in your instant pot.

How To Make Mashed Potatoes In An Instant Pot?

The method of making mashed potatoes in an instant pot is an easy one. That’s the point of them. That they are much quicker to make and that there is a lot less prep.

Plus, boiling potatoes on the stovetop always strips the flavour and the potatoes are never as good.

But with making mashed potatoes in the instant pot you tick all these boxes:

  • Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes No Peel – I don’t peel my mashed potatoes either. You see the best nutrition in potatoes is in the skin and I love the skin from potatoes. You can peel your potatoes if you prefer.
  • Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes No Trivet – You also don’t need a trivet to make mashed potatoes either. Your potatoes instead cook in broth in the bottom of the instant pot.
  • Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes No Steamer Basket – Because you want your potatoes to cook in their juices you also don’t need a steamer basket. Of course, you can do it in the steamer basket instead, but you will then need to drain before mashing.

How Much Water For Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes?

I have tried and tested many rounds of instant pot mashed potatoes and have concluded that for the no drain method you need the following ratio:

  • 1 Kilo raw potatoes = 200ml of stock

If you are feeding 2 people then 1 kilo of potatoes is perfect, for 4 people 2 kilos or in our case 3 kilos of potatoes and 600ml of water or stock.

Beyond the potatoes of course, you can pick and choose what instant pot mashed potatoes ingredients that you personally use.

You might want buttery mashed potatoes, potatoes loaded with cream, garlic or even cheese.

Personally, I prefer my mashed potatoes with a little garlic, butter, seasoning, and Greek yoghurt. But we all have our different preferences.

  • Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes Without Milk – I love to use milk but you can swap it for any dairy alternative. Coconut milk is my favourite sub though and perfect if you are vegan or on the Whole30.
  • Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes Without Sour Cream – I have never used sour cream in my mash before. But some of my readers have and wonder what to sub with. My first choice would be Greek yoghurt as it makes your mash so creamy.
  • Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes Made With Chicken Broth – If you prefer you can swap water for any stock that goes well with what you are cooking. If you are serving your mashed potatoes with chicken then I recommend using chicken broth.

Thank you for the recipe, I have the mini 3 quart Duo ( I have no Manual setting, but used the pressure cook setting) … so I had to just use 1.5lb bag of small potatoes, but the rest of the recipe I left the same. Thank you! This was my first recipe to make in my little IP.
