We are pleased to reveal all the details about our big fat family camping trip across Europe in our tent.
This has been a long time coming and we have been planning this since the start of the year. As you know 2018 on RecipeThis.com is all about budgeting but also enjoying life to the max too.
We have been sharing with you Mrs Beeton recipes where we show you how to go back to the roots of cooking and not spend all your money on processed foods or fast food.
We have also been sharing with you our monthly grocery shop where we feed our family of 5 for $300 for less a month. You can read last months here when we did the Whole30. I have looked online and couldn’t find anyone that did the Whole30 on a budget. And the only one I saw with basic pricing was over $1000.
But one area that many families spend way too much money on is holidays. It always comes at such a big cost and often you end up relying on your credit card and then having to pay it all back when you get home. When I was growing up, my parents friends would get a bank loan every year to pay for their annual holiday and then pay it back throughout the year.
That is certainly NOT how it should be done.
But what if I could buy all my camping gear on a budget and then we could travel around Europe for one full summer, avoid hotels and just see how expensive it really is.
Well that is what we decided to do, and we are finally ready to go. Well almost…..we leave later this week.
We plan to visit:
- Central Portugal
- The Netherlands
Making it 8 countries in just over 80 days.
Leaving on the 7th of June and returning home on the 1st of September. Of course, we could end up hating each other before then or we might decide its not for us, but right now that is our plan!
We also plan on sharing our journey, both in blog posts for our travel section on here and across on You Tube with vlogs of where we have been and what we have enjoyed.

From a budget point of view these will be our biggest expenses:
Ferries – We will be on the Calais to Dover crossing going, then returning via Hull to Rotterdam.
Petrol – Petrol is not cheap in Europe and is at its highest in Portugal. We will have to take this into account as our biggest cost.
Days Out – There are several places we want to visit. We want a day out at Euro Disney, Peppa Pig World, Chatsworth House, Eden Camp, waterparks and a few other places and these add up. It is going to be a case of choosing our favourites and going with them.
Campsite Costs – This is going to average 750€ per month based on the costings that I have done. But this doesn’t include Wifi & electric on most of the places we plan to stay. But they are quality campsites with nice shower blocks, playgrounds for Sofia & Jorge, along with swimming pools.
Then from a cooking point of view even though I don’t plan to eat out frequently, we still want to do so sometimes. What we plan to do instead is lots of home cooking with our Instant Pot and Cobb BBQ.
This leads to our camping gear and how much that ended up costing us.
We got a lot of camping gear for free in exchange for featuring the camping items on the blog and on our social media. This saved us a lot of money and in a separate blog post I will run through what we got and our experiences with some of these brands.
Our tent, sleeping bags, most of our cooking items were all free.
The items that we specifically paid for included:
- New tyres for the car = 460€
- Top box for the car = 183€
- Various kitchen items and storage solutions = 100€
- Adult Bed Mattresses = 35€
- Cool Box = 30€
- Tent accessories = 50€
- Total Cost = 858€
That is literally it. We are taking our Instant Pot with us that we already own, thanks to PR relations everything else has been free of charge. Though tent supplies that we have received have been more than 3000€ so if we had bought everything ourselves it would have cost a small fortune.
But one thing we wanted to do before we went was to make sure that everything was running smoothly and that nothing was missing, and everything worked.
Therefore, we found some old land and put our tent up and filled it with all the things we wanted to take so that we could imagine ourselves camping in our tent.
We also know that when we go, we would be travelling for hours and then putting the tent up. Therefore, we went out for the day and then put the tent up.
You can see us in action, putting the tent up for the first time:
Now that we are all organised, we can´t wait until later in the week when we can make this a reality!
