Pressure Cooker Bok Choy (Pak Choi)

Pressure Cooker Bok Choy

Pressure Cooker Bok Choy is a Chinese cabbage, that you steam once in the Instant Pot Pressure Cooker and you’ll want to eat over and over again.

In fact, as soon as the photos were taken for my pressure cooker bok choy, I had managed to eat it all in a couple of minutes.

Kyle our teen came down and I had that guilty “I ate all the food” look on my face. So poor Kyle didn’t get the chance to find out just how delicious bok choy really is.

On a side note, he always eats the last of everything I want to eat, so at least mum got her own back, this one time!

I picked my bok choy on yellow stickers at the local English supermarket. Rather ironic really.

Its never available at our local Chinese supermarket, but you can head to the English one and find it with big writing on it, telling me that it was made in England.

Not exactly the place where you would expect to find your bok choy supplies.

The first thing I thought, after putting it into my shopping trolley, was think to myself how amazing bok choy would be in the pressure cooker.

You could retain the flavour of the bok choy, add your favourite Chinese seasonings and then have it as either a small healthy snack, or on the side of your chicken or fish.

Pressure Cooker Bok Choy vs Pak Choi

Some of you might be confused as bok choy is also known as pak choi. I was too when I was reading up on it. It is also known as Chinese cabbage too.

It grows in parts of Asia. Especially, in the Philippines, Thailand and in China.

But because we all buy it from different parts of the world, the name can vary. I noticed that Americans associated it most with bok choy, whilst us Brits know it better as pak choi. A bit like the way they call it zucchini and we call it courgette.

If I was you, to make it easier, just refer to it as delicious Chinese cabbage!

How To Steam Pressure Cooker Bok Choy?

Pressure Cooker Bok Choy is so easy to cook. I kind of think of it like kale or spinach. It has an amazing depth of flavour when seasoned and will shrink compared to how much you decided to cook.

When you open the Instant Pot Pressure Cooker, you’ll be wondering where the rest of it went. But it tastes so, so good, that you will want to go out and buy some more bok choy to steam.

To cook pressure cooker bok choy it is simple as this:

  • Give the bok choy a quick clean and trim
  • Mix it with your favourite Chinese seasonings
  • Load it into your Instant Pot steamer basket
  • Cook for zero minutes
  • Binge on it

It really is that simple. Though the last part is so me. I love Chinese food and with the bok choy I couldn’t stop eating it and shared it with NO ONE.

I normally share my food, but bok choy turns me into a greedy pig!

I used to love a trip to the Chinese buffet, but sadly we don’t have a good one near us anymore, so I make do with my favourite one in Spain instead.

I probably get to it once every 2 years, as it is a 7 hour drive from where we live, but its in my favourite holiday area.

Pressure Cooker Bok Choy In 0 Minutes

If you’re new to the Instant Pot and wonder what 0 minutes cooking means, well in a nutshell its fast cooking!

When the Instant Pot cooks, it first goes to pressure and then cooks for your desired amount of time. To cook at zero minutes means you take it to pressure and that’s it. It makes cooking vegetables like bok choy very fast indeed.

Instructions

  • Clean and toss the bok choy into a mixing bowl.
  • Peel and thinly dice your garlic.
  • Peel and thickly slice your ginger cube.
  • Add everything to the mixing bowl and toss your bok choy for a minute until it is well coated.
  • Place into the steamer basket and lower into the Instant Pot, onto the trivet.
  • Place a cup of water at the bottom of the Instant Pot inner pot.
  • Place the lid on the Instant Pot and cook for zero minutes on manual.
  • Serve warm with fish, chicken or tofu.

Notes

I don’t use any salt in this recipe, that is because the soy sauce gives it enough of a salt kick. When it has finished cooking a little of the soy sauce will go into the bottom of the inner pot.
Splash some water into it, otherwise when it comes to cleaning it after you have eaten, you’ll end up with a soy sauce build up.
As you pour the bowl of bok choy into the steamer basket, place any spare strands of ginger and garlic on top. It will help bring out the flavour as it cooks in the pressure cooker.

  1. So frustrated! ☹

Recipe says cook for ZERO minutes!!? So we just eat it raw?!? What is the point of putting it in the cooker then?

Too, the link on this page for Instant Pot Chinese Beef & Beans only takes me to a mouth-watering photo ☹

My first time at this website and already zero for two ????

    • Hi

The recipe says cook for zero minutes because that is the terminology used. It does not mean just place it in the pressure cooker and then take it out. You set the pressure cooker to 0 and it still takes time to get to pressure so cooking the Bok choy as it gets to pressure anytime added would overcook the bok choy 🙂

This link might help you out: http://recipethis.com/instant-pot-terminology-instant-pot-beginners/

As for the link that took you to a picture of some really nice food sorry about that the link was broken 🙂

      • I have a digital pressure cooker, but it’s a no-name brand (lacks some of the better features that an Instapot / Instant Pot branded pressure cooker has), so thank u for clarifying the meaning of “zero minutes” (to bring it to pressure, then turn it off)… super helpful information… and the link too! Thank you for taking the time to reply.

Shame about the Instant Pot Chinese Beef & Beans tho… I would have wanted to try that one… looked absoloutely delicious!!

        • Thank you for replying. We try to help out best we can as can only have the most popular brands as this is what most people use, but we try to help with other brands if we can a there are so many out there now.

The Chinese beef and beans we did, got no one visiting the post so we delete posts when going back for 5 years and if they do not get any visits we try and update them but sometimes it is best to delete and we try to remove all links but we sometimes miss some, sorry about that 🙂
