All the fat in our diet, all the processed foods and don’t get me started with the lack of vegetables that way too many families have these days.
One of the biggest blames is the fast food establishments. McDonalds, Burger King, Pizza Hut, KFC and of course the British kebab and pizza takeaways.
Yet they were around 30 years ago and there was not as many fat people then. Yet its all their fault in the eyes of the rest of the world.
Fast food was available long before then and always will be. But there is one common difference. Back then fast food was a treat. Sometimes once a week or sometimes once a month.
I grew up with the grandparents that would treat themselves to Fish & Chips on a Friday night. And that would be it for greasy unhealthy food.
Yet now the takeaways are busier than ever with people reaching out for the phone and to ring up a takeaway at least 4 times a week.
Yes 4 times a week…..
And now the takeaways will do buy one get one free so that takeaway of a doner kebab and fries, is suddenly a doner kebab fries and a pizza and some onion rings and a full sugar can of drink.
The calories have suddenly tripled in size and are happening 4 times as often.
That 750 calorie treat has suddenly turned into a 3000 calorie treat and 3000 calories 4 times a week. All of a sudden fast food is 12,000 calories a week and vegetables are only ever heard of in the garnish of a burger.
So no wonder we have such a problem.
I remember having a doner kebab takeaway when I was in my teens. I would sit on my tummy next to my mum and we would have a doner kebab each while watching a movie.
It was the 90s and the chances are it would either be an Eddie Murphy or a Goldie Hawn film.
With one portion of fries between us. That was it. There was not this greed like there is today and it would happen maybe once every 2-3 months.
Not several times a week. There was no guilt in having it and you were not fat.
Apart from this you might eat out in a restaurant once a week and there would rarely be any other fast food.
We still had several fast food places and there was of course temptation everywhere, there just wasn’t the greed like there is today.

So lets start with the homemade chicken doner kebabs and then we can add on the sides.
Slimming World Chicken Doner Kebab Fakeaway
Homemade Pita Bread:
Homemade Chicken Doner Meat:
- 4 Tbsp Greek Yoghurt
- 1 Tbsp Lemon Juice
- 1 Tsp Fresh Chives diced
- Salad Garnish
- Start by making the pita bread. In a bowl add the milk and the butter and mix well. Mix in the garlic puree, salt and pepper along with the flour and make into a smooth dough. Knead on your worktop until you have a soft dough. Roll into 4 equal sized pieces. Fold it over like a Cornish pasty and cook for 3 minutes in a large wok or a frying pan on each side with a little olive oil.
- Chop up the chicken. Place your chicken breasts on a chopping board and spend time removing any fat bits, any bones and cutting it as small as you can. The thinner the chicken slices the better it will taste.
- Make the chicken doner kebabs. Season from above all the chicken marinade over the sliced chicken breast. Using your hands make sure the chicken is well mixed with the marinade.
- Cook in the Airfryer via the Airfryer grill pan for 12 minutes at 180c/356f. Toss the chicken with some tongs to make sure it is well cooked after 6 minutes and to make sure it is not stuck to the grill pan.
- Fill the pitas. Start by adding the chicken to them. Then mix Greek yoghurt with chives and lemon for the sauce on top, followed by salad garnish. Then serve.
Slimming World Chicken Doner Kebab Fakeaway
The chicken doner kebab is rather good for the Syns. You are talking:
- 300g Plain Flour = 54 Syns
- 50g Butter = 22 Syns
- 1Tbsp Olive Oil = 6 Syns
- 175ml Skimmed Milk = ½ HEA
This works out at 82 Syns or 20.5 Syns per person. If you compare this to 33.5 Syns to have it at the takeaway and you are reducing your Syns by a third.
Or as an even lower option use a multigrain wrap from your HEB and then press it down into half and heat it up in a wok with some olive oil and then all of a sudden your chicken doner meal comes in at 1.5 Syns and 1 HEB.
Now to beef up this meal with some low Syn sides how about:
Swap the olive oil for Frylight and these are completely Syn free and so easy to make in your Airfryer.
