Slow Cooker English Breakfast

People ask me why I still have a slow cooker and still share slow cooker recipes with you. After all, I have 2 instant pots and a Ninja Foodi and don’t they make your meals for you much quicker?

Well yes they do. I can cook our favourite Scottish Beef Stew in a quarter of the time of a slow cooker stew. But the best thing about the slow cooker is that I can make ahead.

I can put dinner on late morning and then forget about it. Well until the smell of the slow cooker travels around the house and I can slowly make my way to the kitchen and dish up dinner.

Yet with the instant pot I need to put in some effort about an hour before dinner and sometimes I am so tired I just want to get prep out of the way.

Well if this is YOU and you love a slow cooker because you can make it ahead of time and forget about it, then you will love our slow cooker breakfast.

What Is A Full English Breakfast?

A full English breakfast is what my parents always had for breakfast when we were travelling. Just like Americans will often go to a diner and have pancakes.

It is also what they would make for breakfast if we had guests staying or the traditional breakfast that many Brits will have on New Years Day.

It also has this association with hangover food. Or when Americans are having their breakfast casserole us Brits are making a full English breakfast.

Also, the same food I would serve to diners when I was a teen waitress.

But I am sure you want to know what is in an English breakfast. Well it a fry up made up of fried eggs, bacon, sausages, and mushrooms.

It will be served with baked beans and often tomatoes too. If you are going for a big English breakfast you might have black pudding, fried bread, toast, and hash browns too.

We have also got a delicious recipe for an air fryer English breakfast which will show you how an English breakfast comes together.

Full English Breakfast Ingredients

In our slow cooker breakfast, we will be using the following full English breakfast ingredients:

  • Hash Browns – Grab your favourite hash browns and allow them to defrost before adding them. I like to add them on top and then you can stir them in when your breakfast is cooked. Hash browns are also ideal for thickening up your breakfast too.
  • Sausages – Go with a thick sausage that is not overly fatty. Richmond sausages are no good because they are high fat and the fats will ruin your beans as they cook.
  • Bacon – Go with back bacon if you can. It is much leaner and will not make your baked beans overly fatty as your breakfast cooks.
  • Mushrooms – Any mushrooms that you can chop into halves will work well in the slow cooker. I like to have a fridge raid and find mushrooms that need cooking and then load them into the slow cooker.
  • Baked Beans – It doesn’t have to be Heinz if you are on a budget. Any type of baked beans that you like. But avoid flavoured as you are adding in the flavour yourself.

Breakfast In A Can

But rather than a traditional English breakfast, what we are showing you in the slow cooker is how to make the breakfast in a can. A much bigger serving though than one can of breakfast and tastier.

Plus, its an amazing money saver too and produces more than one mealtime of food. We even made enough to freeze some of the leftovers too.

If you have not had the breakfast in a can let me explain my slow cooker breakfast idea.

You can get a breakfast in a can that usually involves baked beans, mushrooms, chopped sausages, hash browns and often a little bit of bacon.

It would then be purchased in a 450g can.

Instead what we are doing today, is loading up our favourite breakfast in a can ingredient into the slow cooker, then you have a massive English breakfast.

You can serve it for breakfast and cook it overnight, but it can be brunch too. Or have it ready for when the kids get in from school for their dinner.

If you think that one breakfast in a can will serve one person then do the maths. I paid 13,05€/£11.20 for all the ingredients. That was enough to feed 8 people plus some more leftover for a sausage casserole.

Making it slightly cheaper than what each can included. Plus, when you buy a can you are not going to find it filled with Waitrose sausages.

Also, if you are a family of four, you know that our breakfast in a can recipe will feed you for two whole meals. You can also use cheaper sausages if you prefer.

How To Make Full English Breakfast?

slow cooker full english breakfast step by step

The quick version of a slow cooker breakfast goes as follows:

  1. Sauté your whole sausages & bacon in the slow cooker.
  2. Remove excess fat.
  3. Load in other ingredients.
  4. Slow cook + stir + serve.

There is a little more to it than that, but those are the simple basics!

Slimming World Slow Cooker English Breakfast

If you mix and match the ingredients in our slow cooker English breakfast, then it will easily work for Slimming World.

  • Go with Slimming World friendly sausages
  • Remove all fat from the bacon
  • Sauté with olive oil spray and make sure the excess fat is removed before cooking
  • Use your own potatoes rather than shop bought hash browns

Overnight Slow Cooker Breakfast

Because you can cook your slow cooker breakfast on low, medium, or high, then if you would like it to be an overnight slow cooker breakfast then it can be.

Set the temperature of your slow cooker to low and put it on before bed. Do the sauté before you go to bed and then leave it on for the morning.

Notes

Quantity. This makes a big English breakfast and I recommend you freeze the second half or reheat it for the next day.
Ramekins. We had a small amount of leftovers after 2 meals. What I did was load some of the leftovers into ramekins and air fried them for about 4 minutes at 160c/320f. It was perfect for the kids. What you can do is after meal 1 load into ramekins and fridge them overnight. Then a quick reheat the next day. Or meal prep for a few days and then you don’t have to worry about breakfast.
Thanks for reading our slow cooker breakfast recipe on Recipe This. We have many more breakfast and brunch ideas for you to check out next. Though, our personal recommendation would be to try our air fryer English breakfast or our air fryer omelette.
