Carrot And Swede Mash

Do you like carrot and swede mash? If you have not heard of it before then its carrot and swede steamed together and then made into a root vegetable mash. Or if you live in the US, you might call it carrot and rutabaga mash.

Whilst it is most famous as a Christmas side dish its also amazing as a healthier alternative to mashed potato and I often have it over my slow cooker cottage pie or slow cooker shepherd’s pie.

At Christmas and when enjoying Sunday roast dinners, I am always more into the sides than I am the meat. I look forward to tucking into my swede and carrot mash as well as other sides I can make with my kitchen gadgets. Plus, I will do all the prep on Christmas Eve Eve so that I can enjoy Christmas with the kids.

A few sides that I love to make with the gadgets include air fryer stuffing balls, air fryer duck fat roast potatoes, ninja foodi veggie bake and let’s not forget about air fryer frozen sprouts.

But it gets even better, last Christmas, what I did afterwards was save the leftover carrot and swede mash and make into mini meatballs and then reheat in the air fryer, so, so good.

I also use leftover carrot and swede mash for our air fryer leftover turkey burgers, air fryer Yorkshire pudding wrap, soup maker boxing day soup and so much more, so don’t forget to make more than you need, as its so yummy you want to enjoy it twice!

Does Swede Take Longer To Cook Than Potato?

Yes, we have found that swede takes slightly longer to steam in the pressure cooker compared to potato. But that’s what great about using the Ninja Foodi, it will steam and perfectly cook your swede when it feels like it takes a lifetime to cook.

I remember in the days of boiling the veggies in a pan to make a veggie bake and you were always waiting for the swede to go for tender.

Now I note that most veggies are cooked in the instant pot or ninja foodi in 3 minutes and swede depending on size of the cubes takes 5-7 minutes.

How Do You Cut Swede For Mash?

I know many people find it hard to cut a swede for mash. After all, try cutting through the middle bit of a swede with a veggie knife and you will find it difficult if you are not a trained chef.

Instead, I recommend the cut round the edge’s method.

This is where you use the knife to cut the top and bottom of and to slice around the edges rather than peeling.

Then slice a long strip from each of the sides, again and again until you have full strips and then you are not cutting the swede into the centre straight away.

Then cube your swede like you would with any vegetable.

Why Is My Carrot And Swede Mash Watery?

This is because as you have cooked the carrot and swede you have not let the water drain thoroughly before mashing into carrot swede mash.

What I recommend you do is to use a sieve (like this bowl set we love) and then let your carrot and swede sit there for a couple of minutes before mashing to get rid of any excess water.

Then when you make into mash just add butter don’t add milk as mashed carrot and swede carries more water compared to classic potato mash.

Carrot And Turnip Mash

If you would rather have carrot and turnip mash, then this can be done instead. Simply swap your swede for the same quantity in turnips and then load turnip and carrot together into the Ninja Foodi.

How To Make Swede Mash?

Do you want just swede mash instead (rutabaga mash) then instead of carrots and swede, just do three whole swedes instead.

You can then add the same seasonings as we have mentioned today in our carrot and swede recipe, you will just be all swede.

Mashed Swede And Carrot Ingredients

Mashed Swede And Carrot Ingredients

Swede – I recommend at least one swede depending on how much carrot & swede mash you want to make. If I am making a big batch for Christmas, I will do 2 swedes.

Carrots – Then with the carrots I try to match the quantity of the swede best I can, so I have a good balance in my mashed swede and carrots.

Liquid – You need some instant pot veggie stock to cook your carrots and swede in. If you don’t and go with water, you will find it very bland once cooked.

Seasoning – Swede and carrot can be a bit boring on its own, so I will usually season it with salt, pepper, and thyme.

Butter – Optional but delicious I love to add a little butter that I can melt into the mash as I use the masher. You can go low fat and use a healthy margarine if you prefer.

Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in this recipe for swede and carrot mash it has just been our Ninja Foodi. We have this one and it’s my favourite and great for a lot of recipes that need a pressure cooker, air fryer or slow cooker.

Plus, we recommend you head over to our Ninja Foodi Recipes category as we have a growing collection of tried and tested Ninja Foodi recipes and have been air frying for 10 years, pressure cooking for 5 years and owned Ninja Foodi’s for 2 years.

How To Make Carrot And Swede Mash?

  • Liquid. Load your veggie stock into the ninja foodi first and then start prepping your carrot and swede.
  • Prep. I recommend peeling and dicing a 50/50 split of carrot and swede. Then add the seasonings and mix with your hands.
  • Cook. Load the carrot and swede into the veggie stock, place the lid on the ninja, set the valve to sealing and pressure cook for 15 minutes so that they become very soft and are very easy to mash.
  • Drain. Do a quick pressure release, remove the carrot and swede, and allow to drain in a sieve for a couple of minutes to reduce the water content.
  • Mash. Next load into a mixing bowl, add butter and extra salt and pepper and mash. Then serve for dinner.

And I am sure you can see now how simple and easy it is to cook carrot and swede mash and why you should be doing the same.

How Long Do Carrots And Swede Take To Cook?

This carrot and swede mash recipe takes JUST 15 minutes to cook in the Ninja Foodi with a quick pressure release.

This is because we are using the carrot and swede for mash, and we want it nice and mushy and suitable for mash.

If was just steaming them like in our instant pot rutabaga recipe or our instant pot carrots recipe, then I would reduce the cook time to JUST 5 minutes.
