Thick Banana Milkshake

Welcome to my thick banana milkshake recipe. Updated with new photos, new info and even more sugar, this is one of my all time favourite blender recipes.

Okay so I am going to be honest now and say this is far from healthy. After all, what is healthy about  a homemade milkshake that is loaded with ice cream and thick cream? But it tastes amazing, it is perfect for summer and your kids will love it!

Well actually my dad would love it to, as would my mum, so if you want a summer cool down then here is your ultimate chance.

Full of refreshing coolness and with a lovely hint of banana without being overpowering, it reminds me of what is so good about a banana milkshake.

Over the summer months (along with my sons Kyle & Jorge and my daughter Sofia) we will probably get through about 10 milkshakes.

This is mainly down to the heat, but also down to the fact that I love them. Using a blender, you can make your own banana milkshakes in a flash.

You can also use our ice cream maker vanilla ice cream recipe if you have an ice cream maker.

In Portugal in the summer months the temperature can go as far as 45c and you will do absolutely anything to cool down.

In fact, in the summer we can easily go through 4 litres of water a day each and we will welcome a nice homemade thick banana milkshake to help us feel normal again and to give us something other than water to have to drink!

When we were recipe testing our updated thick banana milkshake, I had 3 kids, all hanging around for some. I am sure they think mummy has the best job in the world!

Does Banana Milkshake Make You Fat?

Yes really, I get asked all the time, especially in summer if my thick banana milkshake will make you fat.

I also get asked:

  • Is banana milkshake bad for your health?
  • Is banana milkshake healthy?

I always say have the bad stuff in moderation. Don’t have a homemade thick banana milkshake every day, even though you want to.

In the summer months I never have more than one every 10 days. Just think of how much ice cream is in it and you wouldn’t eat scoops of ice cream every day would you?

Though in response to a banana milkshake being healthy, there are healthier banana milkshakes out there. Such as those made with oat milk. But that’s not what today’s recipe is about.

Thick Banana Milkshake With Ice Cream

If you want the best, thick banana ice cream to make at home, it MUST include a few scoops of vanilla ice cream.

Also, by adding vanilla ice cream to the blender, it reduces the amount of ingredients that you need.

The disadvantage of using ice cream is that the banana milkshake won’t stay thick for long.

Just like when you serve ice cream, it soon melts, and you must have it there and then.

I recommend you make your thick banana milkshake at the time you want to drink it. If you are going to leave it for later, then freeze it until you want to drink it.

What’s In A McDonalds Banana Milkshake?

As you would expect there are a lot of unhealthy ingredients in the McDonalds Banana Milkshake and if you wanted to make yours healthier, just by making your own vanilla ice cream would make a huge difference.

Main ingredients in a McDonalds Banana Milkshake include:

  • Milk
  • Sugar
  • Cream
  • Corn Syrup
  • Natural Flavour
  • Mono and Diglycerides
  • Cellulose Gum
  • Guar Gum
  • Carrageenan

How To Make Thick Banana Milkshake?

Thick Banana Milkshake step by step recipe

Making a homemade thick banana milkshake at home, is a case of throwing the ingredients into the blender and drinking until you have brain freeze!

  1. Slice the bananas
  2. Load all ingredients into the blender
  3. Blend until you have a thick banana milkshake
  4. Serve and enjoy

What To Add To Banana Milkshake?

Beyond the ingredients that we add to our banana milkshake you’re welcome to add in some of your own favourite ingredients.

Here are a few suggestions of what else to add to banana milkshake:

How To Prepare Banana Milkshake At Home?

There are only two things you need to prepare prior to making a banana milkshake in the blender:

  • Slicing your bananas so that they will blend easily. Though the size of the bananas depends on the quality of the blender you have. For example, a cheap blender will struggle to get through big chunks of banana.
  • Getting your ice cream out of the freezer. I recommend doing this 10 minutes before making your banana milkshake. Just so that the ice cream is soft enough to scoop up and load into the blender.

How Long Does Banana Milkshake Last?

Not long at all if left out. This is because the ice cream will melt, and you will have a mixture that resembles melted ice cream that is not very nice.

However, if you place the banana ice cream in its milkshake glass in the freezer, then it can last a few months.

Instructions

  • Get the ice cream from the freezer 10-15 minutes before you plan to make your banana milkshake so that it can soften.
  • Peel and dice your bananas.
  • Load everything into the blender and blend until you have a thick banana milkshake.
  • Serve.

Notes

If you want to make a bigger batch or a smaller batch of thick banana milkshake just remember the ratio. You need double the ice cream to banana.
For a healthier banana milkshake, I recommend swapping ice cream for coconut milk and caster sugar for more maple syrup.

  1. What do y’all do for a living? Do you work in a restaurant. I just retired from teaching, so I’m looking forward to cooking again. Like you, I worked long hours, and so I feel liberated and ready for what comes next.
I just saw the last of your series on cooking with the Instant Pot. Where can I find the other parts of the series? Would I find them on your blog?
    Great blog BTW.
