Welcome to our ultimate guide to extra virgin coconut oil. Here at RecipeThis.com we are huge fans of coconut oil and wanted to share with you the coconut oil benefits so that you can get the most out of your extra virgin coconut oil.
I am trying to think hard and trying to remember the first time I ever had extra virgin coconut oil and I can’t. It is one of those products that sits there in my pantry and whenever I need to cook with my extra virgin coconut oil, then I do.
I love to use it as an alternative to olive oil in cooking and it’s a personal favourite of mine, massaged over chicken skin and baked in the oven.
I just remember receiving 6 jars of extra virgin coconut oil as a gift and being obsessed with cooking with it and how amazing it made food taste. That was probably about 2 years ago when we first started RecipeThis.com and was probably the time when I had it in bulk and got the chance to really expand my cooking skills to include coconut oil.
But before ever trying it, I really wasn’t a fan of the idea of it. You see I hate coconut in sweet food and only like it in savoury. I go crazy for coconut milk in Caribbean and South American food as part of a stew or casserole and had never tried the oil.
Well they say once you have cooked once with coconut oil that you will never go back. And even though you won’t see me using it in cookies and biscuits you will see me using it in everything savoury that I can think of.
What Is Extra Virgin Coconut Oil?
Extra Virgin Olive Oil (or copra oil as it is also known) is a specialist oil that is extracted from the meaty part of the coconut, once it has matured to between 2 and 20 months. Because of its high saturated fat content, it can be kept and will not spoil for 6 months, as long as it doesn’t go above temperatures of 25°C/75°F.
Even though it has high levels of saturated fat, it is good fats and therefore should replace vegetable oil within a balanced diet.
Extra Virgin Coconut Oil is made by the meaty part of the coconut oil being removed from the shell and then dried out using sunlight. It is then pressed and dissolved producing the extra virgin coconut oil that we all know and love.
To achieve the BEST EVER extra virgin coconut oil then you need to use the more mature of the coconuts. It is highly recommended that a coconut should be at least a year old for the best results. Though the most premium coconut oil that you buy will be from coconuts that are between 18-20 months in maturity.
Extra Virgin Coconut Oil is associated with being produced from either fresh coconut milk, the coconut meat or even from fresh coconut residue. Another way to make extra virgin coconut oil is by grating it from the fresh meat of the coconut. Or just like in classic cooking by using a manual press.
The difference between coconut oil and coconut milk is simply that water is added to the coconut milk and then the oil is extracted out of the mixture.

Extra Virgin Coconut Oil Benefits
You’re probably wondering what the benefits are of extra virgin olive oil and why so many people around the world rely on it as a superfood. Or why it is so much more superior to other oils that also have health benefits.
In a nutshell the extra virgin coconut oil benefits include:
#1 Coconut Oil Benefits – Haircare
In warm countries it is the norm for the ladies to use coconut oil as a conditioner alternative. It gives them that beautiful shine on their hair and helps their hair regrow. I remember when I was younger I used to use a coconut oil based hair butter. I used to put it in my hair after swimming and it was perfect for helping me in my recovery from the chlorine.
Just add a little after washing your hair and reap the hair benefits that coconut oil has to offer.
#2 Coconut Oil Benefits – Skincare
I have noticed the coconut oil benefits the most when I have been marinating chicken in a coconut oil marinade. I will have mixed the chicken in the coconut oil and then like any other sensible home cook will go to wash her hands due to the dangers of touching raw chicken.
Then as I am washing my hands I am always amazed by how soft they are after having coconut oil on my hands and wish I could afford to replace hand wash with coconut oil.
#3 Coconut Oil Benefits – Dieting
We have all heard the nutrition fat quote, haven’t we?
“If you want to burn fat then you have to eat fat first”
It is so true, and I have always had the most success in my diet through eating good fats. Whether this is avocados, coconut oil or olive oil, it has always helped me along the way. Just think about it next time you become obsessed with the calories in coconut oil, rather than what it can do to aid weight loss.
#4 Coconut Oil Benefits – Digestion
Extra Virgin Coconut Oil can also help with your digestive system. For many, many years my husband Dominic has suffered from IBS. I have never had such issues, but I know he has been very poorly from it and always has food allergies too.
When we moved away from unhealthy processed foods and swapped bad oils for good oils all this stopped. It was like he was cured overnight. It was like a miracle holistic cure.
As well as this he also used to suffer from heartburn and other digestive issues and now this is a thing of the past thanks to coconut oil.
#5 Coconut Oil Benefits – Dental Care
Another of the benefits of coconut oil is how it can look after your dental care. We are all obsessed with milk for improved calcium supply. Yet extra virgin coconut oil is even more powerful than milk for giving us the calcium for our bones and our teeth to be strong and healthy. As well as this it works as an anti-tooth decay remedy.
#6 Coconut Oil Benefits – Improved Immune System
Are you one of those people that gets sick all the time and always has the flu, the common cold or a stomach bug whenever they do the rounds?
Well I am not, and I believe the reason for this is that I follow the Mediterranean diet and eat lots of good fats along with a large amount of fresh fruit and vegetables. Of course, I am not perfect and have a HUGE chocolate habit, but at least I know the main things are right in my diet. The Ultimate Guide To Extra Virgin #CoconutOil @recipe_thisClick To Tweet
I have only ever had a flu vaccine once in my life and that was because it was forced on us when we started university and since then (it was 2004) I have never had the flu, probably get a cold once every 3-4 years and overall have good health.
On a side note – Should I mention now that my husband and eldest son have had a terrible cold recently that they have had for 3 weeks and even though I have been in their company all the time, I have not had any signs of it at all.
So, if you feel like you’re the one in the family that is ALWAYS ill then consider extra virgin coconut oil as your ultimate medicine.
#7 Coconut Oil Benefits – Reduces Cancer Risks
Just like when we featured the benefits of green tea on the blog last month, coconut oil ALSO helps reduce the chances of getting cancer and helps improve your chances of beating the nasty disease.
As well as this it has been associated with reducing the chances of your HIV status developing into the Aids virus.
Coconut Oil Benefits = Even More Benefits
Though the main thing to learn when it comes to the extra virgin coconut oil benefits, is that there are so many it is hard to name them all. The 7 coconut oil benefits above are the main ones, but other popular coconut oil benefits include:
- Speeds up healing after illness
