Instant Pot Chinese Fried Rice

Just like most people I love Chinese food. I was lucky enough to have a Chinese takeaway the street behind where I lived when I was growing up.

It is still there now!

When I first went when I was 10 I would get excited over prawn crackers and sweet and sour sauce.

But as I got older my taste changed to chow mein and egg fried rice dishes. I could fill myself up on these and wished I could eat them every day.

But sadly, they always made me bloated the day after and I am sure I just had to look at egg fried rice on a Chinese takeaway menu and I had gained 10 pounds.

When I got the chance to try out instant pot brown rice and was so pleased that it didn’t make me feel bloated, I was determined to make my old favourite Chinese fried rice in the instant pot using brown rice.

Today, is the result of a long time testing brown rice in the instant pot and transforming the brown rice into one of many favourite rice dishes.

If you love Chinese food but want a low calorie or a low cost way of eating it, then this instant pot Chinese fried rice is dedicated to you.

Instant Pot Vegetarian Chinese Fried Rice

My dad used to make jokes about my mum when she had a favourite hairdresser. That what the hairdresser looked like, my mum looked like.

The 80’s perm was when he started those jokes and it went on for many years, thankfully she never had a male hairdresser!

The same can apply when you follow a food blogger. The foods the food blogger likes can have an influence on you and what you eat, especially if they interest you in food that you wouldn’t normally try or haven’t thought of.

Do note that I am going through a vegetarian/vegan obsession right now, so I will try not to turn you vegetarian.

The favourite food on my dinner plate is the vegetables, then the grains and then back to more vegetables. I eat meat, but its not my favourite food and I could live without it.

Says the woman with 4 turkeys in her freezer, 1 ham and more packs of frozen sausages than I care to admit to.

But I also have a lot of vegan and vegetarian ready meals and find that I love vegetarian cooking.

While most people think instant pot Chinese fried rice and add chicken, pork or shrimp, I am keeping it vegetarian today and focusing on the rice being the star of the dinner plate.

Why Instant Pot Brown Fried Rice?

For many people one of the hardest foods to learn how to cook in the instant pot is rice.

I see more troubleshooting questions about instant pot rice than I see about any other food in the instant pot.

I find that when you cook white rice in the instant pot it can end up sticky and stodgy and not very appealing.

But cook instant pot brown rice and you will be amazed by the results and how much easier it is.

Healthy Chinese Style Instant Pot Brown Fried Rice

My readers asked me to show them how to make instant pot brown fried rice using packet sauce mix.

Such as these Blue Dragon sauce mixes. BUT the Chinese sauce mixes are the only unhealthy ingredient in this recipe.

Therefore, if you want to make it healthier, use your own healthy Chinese sauce or make your own.

I love to mix Chinese 5 Spice, honey, garlic, ginger and soy sauce together. It is what we use on our slow cooker Chinese spare ribs and what we use in a lot of our Chinese recipes.

Or you might have your own mix that you have used for many, many years.

Notes

You can use any garlic and ginger. Grated works well but an easier option is lazy garlic and lazy ginger.
I recommend this brand for healthy bone broth and soup based stocks to use in the instant pot. They are much healthier, but best of all they make your food taste so much better and give a much better pressure cooker flavour.
You can mix and match with your favourite Chinese sauces. I am a big fan of Blue Dragon such as this one, but you can use any. Or make your own and make your instant pot Chinese fried rice even healthier.
