Instant Pot Pumpkin. Learn how to cook a whole pumpkin in the Instant Pot Pressure Cooker. So easy and flavoursome you will wonder why you hadn’t cooked your whole pumpkins for years using the Instant Pot method.
Instant Pot Pumpkin
Today, I wanted to add a new vegetable to our easy Instant Pot vegetables series and now it is the turn of the delicious pumpkin.
A smaller whole pumpkin can fit perfectly in the Instant Pot Pressure Cooker and cooks so fast. It reminds me of when you cook Instant Pot Butternut Squash and try it just the once and you will be hooked!
Here in Portugal, whole pumpkins remain in season for a long, long time. My next door neighbour grows them and will often have 6 at any one time sat in her cool outbuilding waiting to be used.
She is old school and the older generation here in Portugal have pumpkin as the base for their soup.
Classic Portuguese soup is very creamy and usually has pumpkin and carrot as the base and will also feature lots of Portuguese spinach and some Portuguese green beans too.
I am sure she thinks that I don’t feed my kids vegetables as she is always offering vegetables to me.
We often buy a big whole pumpkin (not the sort that would fit in the Instant Pot) and peel and cube it and fridge it. Then we can air fry it whenever we want some. Or add it to casseroles and stews.
But the plan B is that the small whole pumpkins that sadly we can only get around Halloween time, are perfect for steaming in the Instant Pot, scraping the seeds away and enjoying as a side for dinner or loaded with toppings.
Instant Pot Whole Pumpkins
I have been sat on the photos and the recipe for my Instant Pot whole pumpkin since November last year. The problem is they are only available from Halloween through to February, so to get a recipe written up and ready for you in time for Halloween is impossible.
The pictures have been sat in my notes file for you for a whole 12 months!
As a food blogger though this is not unusual. I have met food bloggers that are doing turkey features for Thanksgiving in August, due to magazine demands or making leftover turkey recipes a year in advance.
Or don’t forget summer recipes and needing to do next years fruit recipes a year ahead.
But I don’t need a time machine to tell you just how delicious pumpkin is in the Instant Pot. All the whole pumpkin needs is a little salt and pepper and WOW it is perfect.
Cooking Whole Pumpkins In The Instant Pot
This Instant Pot Whole Pumpkin is perfect for cooking in the Instant Pot. Years ago, before I discovered an Instant Pot I would have used my Russel Hobbs Steamer for everything vegetable that needed steaming.
I would have salmon on one shelf and then broccoli on the other.
It was awful as you had these stupid shelves that always collapsed, and you always had such a limited space for cooking with and then it was awful for cleaning and storing too.
Fast forward a few years and the Instant Pot is big enough to hold your vegetables in one simple pot and keeps the flavour that you often lose when you boil vegetables.
How To Cook Whole Pumpkins In The Instant Pot?
In a nutshell it is so simple, you will remember all the info for cooking a whole pumpkin in your head.
You place the whole pumpkin in the Instant Pot and add some liquid, so that it will have the ability to come to pressure. And then set the timer.
The Instant Pot will then do the rest.
Once done, slice it in half and you have two amazing pumpkin wedges for two.
Deseed each side and load up with my Instant Pot Bolognese.
My Instant Pot Pumpkin Money Saving Tip
I love saving money on groceries and one of my favourite ways is to buy just after the festive celebrations. On the 1st of November while everyone is hungover from their Halloween parties, head to the supermarket.
I grab lots of these small whole pumpkins as the day after Halloween they will often be 80% cheaper.
In fact, this whole pumpkin that we used to experiment with in the Instant Pot cost us just 1 Euro!
