Pressure Cooker Frozen Taco Meat Hacks
It can be really daunting to cook frozen meat in the Instant Pot. There is a fear it will be undercooked, it will be dry or that it will be a health risk.
Here are a few hacks to remember before making pressure cooker frozen taco meat:
Coconut milk Is Amazing – Just by adding a very small amount of coconut milk at the end can give such an amazing texture without that feeling of dryness.
It doesn’t matter if the taco meat is still slightly frozen – It often depends on the shape and size of your ground mince to how cooked it will be in the middle. We found 500g (nearly 1lb) of meat was almost cooked. Just a slight bit of pink in the centre. But because you will be bashing at it for a couple of minutes on sauté, that it will finish cooking then.
I can’t get taco seasoning – We have that problem a lot and often add a selection of seasonings to our Instant Pot rather than a ready-made taco seasoning mix. To make your own taco seasoning add a teaspoon each of cumin, paprika, garlic and onion powder, salt and pepper. Along with a pinch of cayenne pepper.
Easy draining – Because you’re resting the taco meat on the shelf to drain the water, you can lift out the shelf with the meat still on it and quickly remove the water. Then add the meat back in directly into the inner pot.
Lean taco meat works best – We use ButcherBox for our ground meat as it is nice and lean and gives you a much nicer end result with your taco meat. Avoid really cheap mince as it tends to carry a lot of fat.
- Place 1 cup of water into the bottom of the Instant Pot Pressure Cooker.
- Place the trivet/steamer shelf on top and rest the beef onto the shelf.
- Place the lid on the Instant Pot Pressure Cooker and cook for 15 minutes on manual pressure.
- Use quick pressure release and using your hands grab the trivet out of the Instant Pot using the handles.
- Drain the water from the bottom, add the olive oil and place it on sauté.
- Add the mince once it starts to sizzle and using a wooden spoon break down the taco meat until its fully shredded.
- Season well and mix a little more.
- If it is too dry stir in a little coconut milk.
We get our taco meat from Butcherbox they are currently offering free ground beef through this link this month. We cooked just over 500g of beef in our taco meat recipe. If you want to cook more make sure it’s portioned out into another portion and sat on the shelf side by side. Otherwise, you will need to add on extra cooking time.
Can’t make it now? Then pin it for later!
