Welcome to my Slimming World BEST EVER Butter Chicken curry in the slow cooker.

In a delicious creamy sauce and full of body it is perfect for an SP day on Slimming World + it is completely Syn Free.

Now this has to be a favourite of mine. I mean who doesn’t just love butter chicken?

It was my meal of choice many years ago when I used to go out for an Indian with my parents when I was in my teens.

It was always served with almonds so I would always ask for it to be nut free.

I would then have it with chips and naan bread. Prior to this I would have had the poppadum’s with pickles and probably a chicken pakora.

Then I would finish everything off with an Indian dessert from the dessert menu.

My folks hated me doing the last part. Just because they used to always say I was the slowest eater on the planet.

I probably was. And they would be waiting ages for me, so to wait for me to finish what they were eating and then have dessert was like the final nail in the coffin.

But I loved the food and hardly have a curry these days. Dominic doesn’t like it and I hate the idea of making a separate meal for him or for me (depending which way you look at it).

So every now and again when we have leftovers free for him, I will get the slow cooker out for me and the kids (they love curry just like me) and cook up a great butter chicken style curry.

This Slimming World recipe is a basic starting point. One that you can add ingredients to and use as your basic recipe.

If you want to (I do this) then a great idea is to add loads of vegetables and maybe some chickpeas to it and then you have a big chunky butter chicken curry.

Also by adding more vegetables to it, then it becomes perfect for SP days on Slimming World.

Personally, there is a huge amount of tomatoes in the sauce so you can achieve a SP meal just from doing the basics.

  1. Do I have to cook on high for two hours? I’m planning on leaving the slow cooker whilst I’m at work so would be easier to just keep on high or low but for the whole working day x

    • Hi Leanne,

If you are at work for longer than 2 hours then i would suggest leaving it on low for at least 4 hours, or if you prepare it and leave it in the fridge then if someone could pop it in the slow cooker for you 2 hours before you arrive home.

      Kind Regards

Sorry I have absolutely no idea as I don’t count calories. Though I will look into adding calorie information into this recipe at a later date.

    • Hi Nicole,

I never do as the juices in tinned tomatoes are full of vitamins and really good for you and they add flavour to a dish.

    • Hi sarah,

      Yes it could.

I used old big greek yoghurt pots and placed it in the freezer. Or with you cooking it in the slow cooker, one eats first and then you put it down to low and it will keep warm for the 2nd person.

      Kind regards

  2. Hi Samantha & Dominic, looking forward to trying this recipe. Just one question, do you know if your mixed spice is the same as ours in the uk? We tend to use mixed spice in cake recipes but we also have something called all spice. Be grateful if you could advise me.

    • Hi Carol

Yes it is we buy ours from Iceland here in Portugal which is an English shop. It is only different from the US version.

    • Hi Nikki,

Yes absolutely Nikki but i would suggest that you put all your seasonings into a bowl with your chicken and marinade it in the fridge for about an hour before cooking just make sure all the flavour is released.

    • Hi Shaz,

Boiled rice is free so that is perfect on a regular extra easy day. But if you want to go low carb then I would recommend having it with chickpeas.

  4. Hi there, we have just followed this recipe, had the slow cooker on low for 3 hours and thought we would try cutting a piece of chicken to see how it’s cooked, it was really dried out and very chewy! Noticed the lid doesn’t sit flush and lets out all the steam, do you think it had anything to do with it?

    • Hi Sasha,

No i have just worded it wrong. It was supposed to read After 2 hours add the ingredients from the slow etc etc into a blender.

      Sorry about that 🙂

      Thanks

      Sam

  5. Hello,
To save time can I precook the chicken, boiled? Also, I have garam Masala but couldn’t find the 5 spice blend, where can I find a recipe for it? I have my chopped tomatoes & onions in the slow cooker right now!
    Thanks, Tricia

  6. Oops, didn’t realize that you are in Portugal and well, I’ll figure it out and let you know how it comes out.

    • HI Tricia,

      No problem.

Though i should point out that we got the 5 blend from the UK as its not available in Portugal. Just thought i would mention that if you are in the UK.

    • Hi Vicki,

If you mean by cooking using the pressure option and not the slow cooker option then i would cook part 1 in 15 minutes on manual, then part 5 cook for 20 minutes, i would also add more seasonings because we have found that with the Instant Pot the food can come out slightly tasteless after cooking it so quickly. Where as in the slow cooker the chicken has time to marinade whilst it cooks, so maybe marinade the chicken over night in the fridge before cooking it in the IP.

Let us know how it turns out if you decide to try it 🙂

      Kind Regards

      Dom

So I did this today but found it quite bland, not sure if that is normal. Is there anything I could add to give it a bit more flavour? Other than that it smelt amazing

    • Hi Ash,

If you want more flavour I would double up on the spices from 1tsp to 2tsp, that should do the trick. Sometimes you can have the vegetables and chicken hold a lot of water which then dilutes the flavour ?

      Thanks for your comment.

    • Hi Sarah,

If you want to add extra vegetables to your butter chicken then you can do this an hour before your butter chicken is finished.

  8. Hi, just about to try this recipe for the first time – looks delish! I was just wondering if there was a reason you put the yogurt in at the point stated in the recipe? Or could you leave it until the end? Pip

    • Hi Pip,

I added it when i did because i thought it made the curry creamier but at the end should be fine. Hope you enjoy the recipe 🙂

      Thanks.

  9. Cooking the curry at the moment but just had a thought – what size tins of tomatoes did you use? I’ve added 2 tins of 400g – is that correct?

  10. Hi I’m was planning on making this tomorrow, I want to pop everything in slow cooker and leave for work for 7 hours. Would this be ok? I wouldn’t be able to blend anything after couple hours?

  11. Hi Sam,

For the first part, where you put the tomatoes and onions in the slow cooker first for two hours; do we add any liquid to the slow cooker?

Also is it ok to substitute with cherry tomatoes?

    Thank you!

    Reply
    • Hi Rachael,

No liquid required. The tomatoes carry a lot of liquid on their own so it is not necessary to add liquid.

And yes you can sub for cherry tomatoes.

      Kind regards
